I have gear oil on my muffler
Where could this be coming from?
|
Re: I have gear oil on my muffler
prolly the front pinion seal on the rear end
|
Re: I have gear oil on my muffler
Could be:
Front pinion seal. Loose drain plug on the axle. Left or right axle seal leaking. Leaking rear axle cover. Worst case senerio... cracked axle housing or axle tube. |
Re: I have gear oil on my muffler
Looks like it may be the front pinion seal.
|
Re: I have gear oil on my muffler
you sure it is gear oil and not tranny fluid?
you could be getting seapage from the rear seal of the tranny... |
Re: I have gear oil on my muffler
It is on the rear end housing and muffler only. And it smells like gear oil.
|
Re: I have gear oil on my muffler
most likely the pinion seal then...
|
Re: I have gear oil on my muffler
thanks, What should I do?
|
Re: I have gear oil on my muffler
Since everyone else listed the likely sources, I just wanted to make sure you checked those pesky muffler bearings? May have blown a seal there also. :23:

Re: I have gear oil on my muffler
Anyone have an idea what could cause this?
|
Re: I have gear oil on my muffler
It can be caused by a "bad" seal, road debris getting caught under the chassis, low lubricant/heat condition, excess "play" in the pinion bearing, etc.
Usually no big deal to replace. Good time to add that FRPP aluminum driveshaft though............ |
Re: I have gear oil on my muffler
on my 87 lx coupe, i have had gear oil work its way out through the threads of the pinion nut believe it or not. after a quick removal of the nut, spread some rtv on the threads, reinstall nut and torque to spec. good to go!

Re: I have gear oil on my muffler
I think the guy who did my rear did a poopy job.

Re: I have gear oil on my muffler
Are you sure the differential wasn't overfilled and the excess is comming out the top vent opening on the passenger side of the axel tube, then splashing onto the back of the muffler? Is the cap still on that axel tube vent?
