Nearly Overheated el Mach Juan today, ticking fan.

Soo, to make a long story short as possible, the car has been sitting a lot lately. The battery (which I start every two/three weeks if i'm not driving it) was so dead it wouldn't hold a charge even after 16 hours on trickle charge and another hour on 40a. I swapped it with another battery and proceeded to head into town (30min each way). I made a stop at my bank, everything seemed fine. I headed back down the road and noticed my a/c went hot on deceleration...took a look at the temp gauge and it was 3/4 towards H. I pulled into a parking lot, popped the hood and noticed a terrible ticking noise...loud. I immediately shut it off and left the hood open hoping to dissipate the heat. After a half hour I could finally open the coolant cap without scolding myself...:smack:...and topped it off with some coolant I bought from a nearby gas station. I started the car and after about 5 min the gauge started to move towards H again so I shut it off and called AAA for a tow back home. It sounded like a blade on the fan had broken and was making a "tap" noise as it spun.

What might have caused it to break and do that (assuming my guess is correct)? Am I incorrect in my assumptions? What in the heck might be going on? T-stat ok? I have no clue about this stuff. Anyway, tomorrow I am pulling the fan out to inspect (seems like a straight forward removal, right?). Oh, the car has about 25k miles...that seemed odd to me, but it is still 7 years old. Also I have a custom dyno tune that seems to make my fan run a bit more often, but surely not enough to kill it.

If it is the fan, what do you guys recommend replacing it with? I might as well upgrade when fixing something. I plan to get "blown" eventually, but not in the near future. Thanks, guys!

The fans do break rather easily. Mine broke at about 24k or so... didn't cause an overheat at the time though. It was about $120 for a new fan, 30-45 min to replace.

You'll need to burp your cooling system when you get her replaced though, if you lost any coolant when she heated up.

Well If you did pull it over as soon as you say, Thats great, especially not trying to drive it again..
I cant believe how many people try to drive cars when theres a problem esp with heating..Good Job on your part, as for whats wrong I cant comment, But did wanna say good job on getting it towed.

Yeah, I am only 24...this car is my "baby" and I don't have the kind of money that warping the heads or some other terrible fiasco wouldn't be a big deal so I try my best to pay attention and not take chances (unless I am staging, :23:)

I am pulling the fan off hopefully tomorrow to take a look...it was 100 degrees today, my *** came back in after 15 mins out there :eyes:

It is the fan, so...

Should I just get a stock replacement? An upgraded single fan (more cfm)? Or a Dual Fan setup?

My long term goals do include a blower/intercooler, though that is years from becoming a reality. Still, I am a fan of upgrading sooner than later when components fail. My question is really what specific fan will bolt right up? I see tons of electric fans, but mostly "universal" fans and some require relays, etc. I don't mean for you guys to do my homework for me, but I am not really sure what is a good use of my money with the cooling system.

Any help is appreciated!!!

etc? I also thought I should mention that I plan to get a new optima battery also since mine just died and won't hold a charge long...anyone know where I could get a yellow top for the Mach? I want to have the electric fan, electric water pump, HID kit, etc wired to it so I thought yellow might be better than red? What sites sell Optima's?

those both look nice with those shrouds, I have a 3000cfm Zirgo I haven't attached to mine yet, gotta figure out a fan shroud or change it up and go with something else.

Ideally I'd like to get a OEM fan to work with the on3 turbo kit....they say it fits....but It doesn't. I'm readjusting it all now in hopes to get one to work.

My local autozones sell optima's.

So, I replaced the broken fan only to have the car overheat on me AGAIN last week. I bought a new tstat (though I messed up and got a 192* not a 180). I am also getting stuff to flush the radiator tomorrow. This car has been a PITA lately. I am also having an issue with my CEL p0190 being thrown all the time. I have already replaced the FRPS and it started happening again. Bah. At least the car gets put up for winter around this time of year anyway. :wall: :wall: :wall:
