I vote for exhaust leak. For some reason Ford decided a flat connection instead of a ball joint type was a good idea on the passenger side.
Loosen and re-tighten the bolts on the flange and see if that helps. Or get a new gasket for that side, remove x-pipe and install the new gasket. Heck maybe the previous owner installed the x-pipe and didn't replace the gasket.
