Performance rotor/pads suggestions

I had an alignment done the other day and the shop told me my rotors are too thin to turn and my brakes probably will not pass safety inspection at the end of the month. Then gave me some crazy estimate for all of it, I told them I do my own work and thanks for the info.

Anyway, I was wondering about crossdrilled or slotted since they need replacing.

Anybody suggest a particular brand of rotor and front brakes?
Should I just get OEM style?
Are there any pros/cons with slotted or drilled??

I don't do any track driving. Just do a couple drag days a year with my local Mustang club.

Re: Performance rotor/pads suggestions

Drilled/slotted is a gimick and will just reduce rotor integrity if anything. Go with OEM (brembo) blank replacements. Tirerack sells them. They aren't cheap. Hawk HPS pads are probably your best bet for a performance street pad, though I've heard good things about EBC pads.

Re: Performance rotor/pads suggestions

Slotted Brembo's (from tirerack.com) and Porterfield R4S pads FTW!!! Drilled rotors tend to microcrack around the holes. One of my cars has drilled as the only option and it is always a concern. Slotted does nothing to reduce the integrity of the rotor but makes a boatload of difference when driving in the rain since it can shed the water quicker (the theory of cleaning the pad/allowing pad gasses to vent works well for wet rotors also). I have heard great things about Powerslot slotted rotors but no firsthand experience.

Re: Performance rotor/pads suggestions

I just replaced (literally) all four rotors and pads for $226.00 shipped from Rotorpros.net after hearing about them from this forum. I went with the slotted rotors just for kicks. I did bed them in as suggested, I couldn't believe the smoke that came off of them.

Just a little info ....ANY Rotor can crack ...
(If it was just a case of the style of rotor used everyone would be using the same ones ...they do not...Drag racing,Road racing and HP street cars brakes differ. Most suffer from abuse or mis-application ) Solid ..Drilled ...Slotted...Both !.. Solid rotors cannot vent the gases well off the rotors . Drilled rotors are not bad if drilled properly or the holes are cast into rotors. Slotted rotors are ok but will warp if overheated. The general rule is control the heat ! Heat is what cracks rotors . Use the proper pad material on the discs and run vents to the rotors. Also the larger the brakes used for the car, the less they have to work ...less heat less problems.Different disc materials can also make a differance too. Cars makers put just enough braking power to stop a Stock car .If the car is modded and made faster the brakes need to be upgraded too. I like Brembo and have not had any of these problems .

Re: Performance rotor/pads suggestions

I went with the Powerslots and Hawk pads. Noticed a difference in braking and have no signs of warping after close to 20K miles.

Cool Re: Performance rotor/pads suggestions

I second Brembo sloted! I have them with ceramic pads and the Cobra R calipers car really stops well.

Re: Performance rotor/pads suggestions

I am trying to put together a M1R brake deal along with Joe Charles,
if you want to stay OEM Ford/FRPP/Motorcraft.

Personally I am not a fan of slotted/drilled rotors.

I bought the excat OEM front pads from joe. The part number is: F5ZZ-2001-A. But I paired them with some slotted and drilled rotors from Baer.

Re: Performance rotor/pads suggestions

Wow. All these post were very helpful. I have to get all this within 2 weeks so I can get it installed and inspected.

I'll do some research on pricing and look at braided brake lines too. From the looks I'll stick with Brembo replacements and Hawk or EBC pads. Thanks all.
Now I just got to look at the sticky on installing it.

Any suggestions on braided lines? Is it worth it?

+1 on that.

funny how many people just automatically assume drilled rotors will crack.

I would still strongly suggest the OEM pads for DD.

Re: Performance rotor/pads suggestions

I installed the Goodridge braided lines (again from Tirerack) a few months back and I love the feel. But then again, I changed the fluid at the same time to ATE super blue brake fluid. That combo, paired with the R4S pad definitely changed the braking characteristics of the car for the better.

Re: Performance rotor/pads suggestions

Do the brake lines. Makes a real difference in the feel of the pedal - much more solid, easier to modulate at the limit

This might not be a bad ideal to do it all at the same time the line lock, braided lines and change the brake fluid. might make it easier in the long run. thanks

Re: Performance rotor/pads suggestions

I have DBA rotors and Hawk HP Plus pads with stainless braided lines and Amsoil fluid... I also have Kenny Brown brake coolers up front and they are by far the best brakes I've ever had! my only complaint is the brake dust is bad with those pads...

I'm doing rotorpros in a few days. I need to paint the calipers too. Sounds like the hot rod will sit outside for a weekend to get this done. I have rotorpros parts on the hot rod too.
