Need help. trying to fix my rattling shifter

My shifter has been rattling. Thought maybe the plastic cap on the bottom popped off or something. Cause if I hold the shifter while i'm driving it won't rattle. Well I took the shifter off and everything looks ok. But I can't remember if there was tranny fluid inside the shifter part or not because it's kinda bone dry right now. Is there supposed to be fluid in here? I just can't remember. Here's a pic-

Looks fine to me. There doesn't have to be any fluid in there but you could add a cap full to the place where it has fluid in your picture.

If you are using an aftermarket shifter, noise is normal...

i am pretty sure that i had some fluid in mine. try repacing the bushing where the shifter connects to the handle.

What I'm gonna say will probably sound to simple to fix the issue but could the shifter handle bolts be a little loose? It happened to me on my old Hurst shifter in my 88 Fox.

Same thing happened to me. Ford replaced my trans, and they forgot to bolt the shifter properly.

Its not fun throwing the shifter from 5th, to 4th, and the shifter just folds.

Scared the crap out of me.

Re: Need help. trying to fix my rattling shifter

Nothing is loose and the shifter ball i'm using is the one that came off the stock shifter. There was no noise since I installed it over a year ago and everything seems to look ok. At first I thought it was the shaker than realized it was the shifter ratlly when I put my hand on it while driving and the rattling went away. I put it back on yesterday but haven't had a chance to driver her yet. Wanted to let the silicone dry first and i've been at work all day so I'll take her out tomorrow. Thanks for the responses and I'l update how it goes tomorrow.
