Re: Raising the Shaker - Step by Step
It only raises it about 3/8" inch, and pics aren't really going to show that little bit of change very well.
Pros: looks a little better Cons: none if you don't raise it too much and possibly crack the hood

Re: Raising the Shaker - Step by Step
How many inches should it be raised as to not crack the hood?

Read the instructional thread, it's been a while since I read it, but it should give you all the answers. DON'T go too high!

Re: Raising the Shaker - Step by Step
This is a good mod at which to start being a handyman. You remove the accordion shaped piece of air duct between the shaker ane the airbox (either end), remove the two bolts on either dide of the shaker base that are located under the conical bump on either side of the shaker water shield, pull up on the shaker, and it will pop off. Four ball studs are thus exposed (the shaker sits on these), remove these carefully (they are plastic) and place 3-4 1/4" washers beneath them and reinstall them. Reassemble in reverse order....push down on the top of the shaker after you set it onto the ball studs to make sure it's fully seated, reinstall the two side bolts, and reattach the air duct.
Do you really want someone at a shop doing something like this?

Re: Raising the Shaker - Step by Step
I did this a week ago, just for something to do. Raised only about 3/16" using some washers, lubed. Never had a rattle, still don't. I DO think the shaker shakes a little more, which I LIKE! Seemed like it wasn't doing that much before. Anybody else think that after doing the free mod here?
Fun little thing to try. Thanks for the good how-to guys!:ORANGE:

Re: Raising the Shaker - Step by Step
Okay so another free mod I noticed is removing the air intake silencer. What benefits does this have?

Re: Raising the Shaker - Step by Step
After 4 years I finally did this, but did it different. Posting in case it helps someone else. I spent some time finding "where" the noise was coming from.
After removing the shaker there was some bare metal in one area. It became obvious thatt here was some metel/metal contact happening. The drivers side hold down bolt is where it was happeing. The bracket slips into a slot on the shaker. Both pieces were rubbed raw. Raising the shaker will separate those two contact points. After raising the scoop I started moving it around and looking under the scoop. The scoop was hitting the big bracket in a couple of areas. I thought about it and it reminded me of a suspension that was bottoming out. The solution? Bump stops. I took a tube of black silicone and placed little beads/droplets on the large bracket where the scoop was bottoming out. I let it dry thoroughly and reinstalled the scoop.I moved it around and absolutely no noise now. Lifting the scoop cleared the top area, the bump stops cleared the bottom area. It's so nice now.

Re: Raising the Shaker - Step by Step
Spacers, either nylon or aluminum, can be easily found in any full-service Ace Hardware store in lieu of using washers.

Re: Raising the Shaker - Step by Step
I raised my shakera couple of weeks ago and put 2,000 miles on her with no problems as far my hood cracking. Wow it looks allot better then the factory height, looks way more aggressive!
I used some spacers that I had and drilled them out and used them in the front only...and placed them under the shaker bracket. Came out great and didn't use any washers. If anyone needs some of these spacers I have another set. I'll drill them out and send them to you no charge. Let me know. |

I also raised my shaker at the same time as the intake. which was almost 8,000miles ago. prob about a 1/4 inch. didnt need any washers or anything. But took off the shaker again to re adjust because one side was higher than the other. Prob just moving around. so i put a couple washers around now.

Re: Raising the Shaker - Step by Step
See if the studs tighten down sufficiently if you use three, as there may not be enough threads for them to do so. Also, make sure the hood opening doesn't press against the bottom half of the shaker after you raise it, which has been known to start cracks in the fiberglass hood. 3/16" is probably the most you can raise it, 1/4" is definitely OK.

Re: Raising the Shaker - Step by Step
Are there any benefits from raising the shaker or is it just for looks?

Re: Raising the Shaker - Step by Step
A couple pics of my raised shaker. Stock shaker looked "sunken" in the hood so had to raise it to proudly display it!

Re: Raising the Shaker - Step by Step
I followed RedRocket's lead on this one, the 1/2 inch spacer in the front under the bracket look awesome!
