Re: Official Computer Questions Thread
An awesome 128 or 256 video card is much better than a junk 512 video card. Size doesn't necessarily matter

depends on which card....most 512mb cards have slower ram than 256mb cards...most games wont even use over 3/4 of the 256 currently anyhow...so usually, a good 256mb card will be faster.

Re: Official Computer Questions Thread
just be sure you have a fast cpu to go with that fast video card makes no sense to upgrade one and not the other.I play alot of BFME2 so if you ever play that game then you know what it takes to run a game that.Plus dont count out the PSU also if you go with a upgraded video card.I agree with 65fastback about the 256 is plenty on the video card.

Re: Official Computer Questions Thread
easiest way to explain it....is....it is like "tuning" the computer in a car...you can make it faster than it comes from the factory by tuning or "overclocking" it.....

Re: Official Computer Questions Thread
overclock refers to the increase of the working frequency of any electronic component working at a specific frequency. The reason for overclocking is performance but only do it if you know what your doing and have the proper cooling.I run an ati x800 pro and to overclock that card i use ATITOOL turn up the core and memory ... but if you exp prob at game play just back off some.

It's like dyno tuning your car to get more power out of what you already have. You can gain some power before you reach the limit and need more mods (bigger processor)

Re: Official Computer Questions Thread
I have a question. I am getting a "ATI video BIOS error" along with a "Ati2evxx.exe" when my computer starts up. I talked with dell tech support and they came out today and replace the graphics card. It didn't fix it. So now I am not sure what to do.
Only good thing to come from the tech coming out today was my graphics card was updated from a ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 (128mb) to ATI Mobility Radeon 9800 (256mb). So my system is as follows: Dell Inspiron 9100 P4 HT 2.8 ghz 2 gb (corsair system select) memory ATI Mobility Radeon 9800 (256mb) don't know if you need to know more........... The techs now want me to run a "windows xp repair installation" has anyone ever done this? Also what do you guys recommend me doing? Thanks everybody.

Re: Official Computer Questions Thread
you need to run a driver cleaner on the system in windows safe mode then reinstall the most recent ati catalyst drivers.

I tried to install the catalyst driver but the ati website would not let me.

Re: Official Computer Questions Thread
Any of you guys running XP64? I am but I should have waited. I've got the necessary programs on and running - CAD and such, but I have a problem running most programs out of the box. I thought there was a 32B emulator for loading non-64bit programs but I have not found it.

Re: Official Computer Questions Thread
Yeah, support sux. I should've just gone with XP Pro but I had to be a nimrod and try the "latest"....hindsight's 20 20. I've got it running real good but anytime I want to play with other software (flight sims and such) it usually won't load. It was also fun finding AV software to run on it...

Re: Official Computer Questions Thread
Windows Vista is just around the corner.....................
On the video card posts above, It's not just the amount of video ram on the card. It's also the type, and the bus type. There's DDR300 on up, and DDR 2 at various speeds. Also, on laptops, there is also shared video (sucks the video memory from system memory) and dedicated memory, (which does not use system memory) Then there's also the old AGP bus (several types) and PCI-X (aka pci express). PCI-X is a lot faster, and is not the common type. Both PC's and notebooks have all the types above. Personally, I prefer ATI Radeon PCI express on all counts.
