Greatest Sleepers
To me Sleepers are some of the best cars around because they'll blow your doors off when you least expected it. I was wondering what everyone’s favorites are. Two that I always remember are the Spirit R/T and the Mercury Marauder (new ones) old ones where cool too though.

Re: Greatest Sleepers
My friend had a 70 Buick GS stage1 455(415 Hp 510 TQ Stock) in High School. He got it for 1000 bucks. It had rusty quarters and he painted with spray cans of black primer. If you didnt know any better this thing just looked like a regular Skylark, big ol POS!Wed go on Woodward and race all kinds of people in their nice shiny cars, leaving them shaking their heads. What fun.

Re: Greatest Sleepers
Spirit R/T's are real cool little sleepers. Kind of like a old srt-4. Kid I know has 3 of them one of them is the fastest stock turbo one.

Re: Greatest Sleepers
I owned a 57 Chev wagon [not the Nomad] with a 375 HP 396 and four speed. Talk about a sleeper. It was NOT a chick magnet. I got rid of it.

Re: Greatest Sleepers
Good point, forgot about those. The first Daytona Turbo Z's were seriously underestimated as well. Still wouldn't mind finding a good Daytona Iroc R/T.

Re: Greatest Sleepers
I remember growing up with my Dads 1967 Chrysler 300 2 dr hardtop with the 440ci motor rated at 375 hp. Torque was 480 ft-lbs at about 2800rpms.
It was a boat, but man that thing would move for such a heavy car that looks slow. http://www.chrysler300site.com/cgibin/history.cgi?1967

Re: Greatest Sleepers
Well, I do have a 85 Shelby, which is virtually the same as the omni 9basic platform is the same) LOL...My Shelby had no problem beating the pony cars of the 80s, and into the early 90s, even a few 924/944s, only got beat in the 80s by a GN!

Re: Greatest Sleepers
How's the resto coming? My 83 now has a new floor and will have new carpet in a month or two. The 89 is waiting for me to rebuild an engine, carpet and paint. It will be seriously underestimated. Going to use the original T1 decals but it's not going to be a T1.

Re: Greatest Sleepers
You know what where also pretty fast I actually remember one beating a corvette of the same year in a mag article. The jeep Comanche they had close to 200 hp and only weighted less than 3000lbs. I remember the vette had something like 35 more hp but it had 300 or more pounds on the little truck.

Those 455's had some serious torque also. 1970 Monte Carlo (first year for them) which an option was a 454 rated at 360 hp and rated at 500 ft-lbs of torque. I remember them having a huge/long front end, but man those vehicles could move also!

Re: Greatest Sleepers
For late model cars, the Magnum SRT-8 is pretty sleeperish. If i took off that little SRT-8 badge on the rear, there would be no identifying marks on the exterior. Then to blast off a 13.1.... Thats pretty impressive to me for a 4400# station wagon.

Re: Greatest Sleepers
The AMG "Hammer" has always been one of my favorite "sleeper" cars since I first read/saw it in Road & Track when I was younger, and was a precursor to the 500e (actually probably more or a sleeper than the "Hammer".)

Re: Greatest Sleepers
I almost ordered this combo:
if you were savy you could order a 95 dodge dakota with a 5.8 and a 4:10 rear end and a 5 speed.
