You need to buy some electrical contact cleaner (from auto zone or radio shack). It's not necessary to take the element out of the housing. You can simply take off the intake hose and spray up into the mass-air inlet tube (small hole in housing). Give it a few minutes to dry before you start it up. The elements stay pretty clean but if you're using a K & N or other oiled filter it's not a bad idea to do when you clean the filter.(A note of caution: do not saturate the filter when you oil it. Excessive buildup will ruin it and Ford will not replace it under warranty for oil failure) The most indicative reasons for cleaning are eratic idle or slight surging when you first put you're foot into it.

How about pipe cleaners? If you are not familiar with them, they are made of wire with a soft material around the wire. Typically they are used to clean firearms. I have heard of these being used for cleaning delicate electrical parts as well.

Take the sensor out of the housing. Spray it down really good with electrical parts cleaner. Give it a few mins to dry before you put it back together. Should not need to touch it with anything but if it is really visibly dirty then you could use a Q tip soaked in electical parts cleaner. But if you decide to touch the wires be very careful.
