Unhappy Crack in hood

Well Friday evening after washing the car I started drying it off and I found a crack on the underside of the hood. It is along the driver side edge about 18.5" from the hinge end of the hood. The crack goes threw a small hole and on to the other side towards the Shaker. I took the car into the dealer today and they said that they would have to have the Ford Factory Rep take a look at it. They made me feel like I had somehow wrecked the car and cracked it. They said the factory rep won't be back until next Monday so they would call me when he showed up.

I have not done any mods to the car yet so everything is still factory. Has anyone else seen or had this problem and how was it handled?

You haven't performed the "Shaker Mod" to raise the scoop, have you?

No I have not. I was looking at doing that or adding the shaker extension but nothiing has been done. The crack is not obvious until you raise the hood and carefully examine that area.

I'm thinking about checking to see if the motor mounts are ok.

Well at least I know others have had the problem when I finally get to talk to the factory rep. Did you have any trouble with getting it replaced under warranty? How long did it take for them to fix it?

Cracked Hood

I also had a cracked hood, but it was at the point on the driver's side front where the rubber bumper contacts the underside of the hood. The dealer body shop manager looked at it and immediately stated "We (FORD) will replace the hood. It was replaced along with new stripes and looks great. The hardest thing was to get the emissions label replaced, they ordered it three times before the correct one showed up! All is well now and my "Z1 RCODE" is doing great. I wish you well with your dealer.

If the area you described appears to be a "Stress Crack" you will probably be in good shape for a warranty replacement. If it is obvious as "Impact Damage" your probably going to need to claim your insurance for the repair/replacement. Good luck:THUMBSUP:

Approved hood replacement

Well after waiting 18 days for the factory coordinator I have finally been approved to get a new replacement hood. It was obvious in my opinion that they were going to have to replace the hood. But the dealer was not willing to risk ford not paying for the warranty repair. :HOPPY: Well I was told that the hood should be in next week and they will start on the painting.

As a point that anyone else should consider if this happens to you. Make sure you require them to replace all of the factory stickers. If you don't mention it it may not get done.

Hood replacement experience

Well just to let everyone know my experience with the hood replacement. I took the car in on July 20 for the hood replacement. Went to pick the car up on July 23 and these were some of the problems noted (see list below). Any way it was late on a Friday when I went to the body shop so I took the car home for the weekend with them agreeing to repaint the undeside of the hood with clear coat and my concerns about the difference in color hue on the top side. Also it gave me some time to find other issues. Other people I know noticed the color hue difference when I brought it home. Back to the shop on July 26 to get this corrected and pointed out the other problems. July 29 got a call and said it would not be ready that they are going to repaint the hood. This means they wil keep the car over the weekend. I'm p***** off with them at this point. Tentative date to get the car back is Aug 4 since they have to re-order the stripes. I'll update the post after I get the car back.

Summary List of issues:
Wrong color hue (Zinc yellow had a green hue)
No clear coat applied to under-side of hood
paint poorly applied under hood and not sanded
hood not properly aligned
Shaker opening edges were not sanded and looked jagged
no stickers under hood (belt diagram)
scratch on front edge of hood
and paint blemishes

I hope this helps anyone that might experience the same hood problem.

when i first bought my mach i found it was very difficult to close the hood ...so i had one of my techs at work look at it for me and for some reason ford put a pin to prevent adjusting the latch so we took the pin out adjusted the latch and you can close the hood with one finger now...sheet metal composite is prone to cracking and it may be because the hood is very hard to close...the two tabs on the header panel where the bumper clips to were actually cracked on mine cause the hood had to be slammed to close have a look at this it may help you guys out...

I've beeen keeping a close eye on my hood for quit some time. It isn't cracket "yet" but off the corner of the shaker opening on the drivers side there appears to be what looks like a crack forming under the paint. Like I said I've been keeping an eye on it and so far no real crack. Just looks very suspicious. Hopefully it isn't really a crack under there!

Mine was cracked on the inside of the shaker opening.. Ford replaced it and the body shop who did it made it look like new again. They painted the hood and blended the fenders in for a perfect match... new fender ponys , antenna mast base, stripes on the hood and small stripes at bottom of fender behind wheels. They went the extra mile to make sure even a body shop person couldnt tell it was repainted and I was happy with there work.

they are doing mine as we speak, it seems like most people including me, had their hood crack in opening corner closest to the driver.

You would have to do a search of past threads but it seems I remember Totoland Mach posting something about adjusting the stops on the hood so that it would close with 1 finger. Toto if you see this post, please verify this so I won't believe I am

I had mine replaced several months ago and I'm still waiting on the correct sticker for the fan belt routing. They have ordered three times and it still is the wrong one. I'm surprised that they cannot get that right when they use the VIN number when they order. The hood looks great other than the wrong sticker.

When I first tried to adjust the latch on my hood, I found the same thing. There is an alignment pin which prevents you from moving the latch in relation to the bracket.

However, in taking it apart more, I found that the bracket itself is adjustable. By loosing the screws which hold the bracket to the radiator cross member, you can move the bracket (and latch) left and right, and by inserting body shims, raise the bracket (and latch) up.

I didn't have to move my bracket (and latch) very much to get the hood to close significantly easier.

Re: Crack in hood

I really, really, hate to bring up old posts.... BUT, I think this may be happening to my mach's hood... My question is:

Is it just going to happen again with the new hood?

Was there any adjusments anywhere in the car to prevent a repeat?

I'm so pissed!

Re: Crack in hood

People learn body and paint at the dealerships, then move out to private shops after they gain experience. Just think of it as helping someone get their start.

It is interesting that you mention that. I bought my Mach 1 used with no decals on the hood. I found this on the Oasis report:
REPAIR HISTORY:
DATE: 04/14/2004
DEALER: Terrebonne Ford
WARRANTY CLAIM NUMBER: 100408
PROBLEM: HOOD -- BROKEN/CRACKED
REPAIR: FIBERGLASS HAS STRESS CRACK IN HOOD. R&I HOOD, R&I HOOD INSULATOR, REPAIR CRACK IN FIBERGLASS, PRIMED, PAINTED UNDER HOOD - SAND, SEAL & REFINISH ENTIRE HOOD
They did not even replace the hood. You'd never guess what happened to that repaired fiberglass.....let me give you a hint. IT CRACKED AGAIN!!

Re: Crack in hood

Well, obviously fixing it is not the way to go, replacing the hood seems to be the common fix, hopefully some how it's related to the new bushing for the shaker and if you get them it won't happen again.
