is KB's 2.1 kit a 6 rib drive

04 Cobra owner here and was pondering through these pages a bit to check out what people are accomplishing with these cars. I noticed most people are using the KB's 2.1 and rightly so as it gives you a comlete intercooled kit. But I think I noticed that it only uses a 6 rib drive belt system?

I'm guessing if you kept the boost fairly reasonable that belt slip wouldn't be too bad, but say you stepped up the bottom end of your engine later and wanted to pulley up to 15psi or so, would you be OK or would you have to lay down alot of money for 03/04 cobra parts to get an 8 rib drive?

Anybody here running in this boost range with the 6 rib set-up? I'm running a D1 procharger set-up on my 01 4wd f150 at around 12 psi with a 6 rib and it always slips on the first throttle stab, but it's kind of like a burn-out at the drag strip, after heating up the belt and pulleys with the slippage from the first romp, she's good to go without any slip, but I also have very good belt wrap on that procharger.

I love these mach-1's but I'm pretty sure I'd want more than 10 psi of boost at least someday.

Re: is KB's 2.1 kit a 6 rib drive

Correct me if I'm wrong here. KB 1.7 and 2.1 are complete kits for the mach1's, stepping up to a KB 2.2 or a whipple 2.3 is basically buying a blower for an 03/04 Cobra and making the mach-1 to Cobra eaton swap prior?

The 2.2 would upgrade you to a 8 rib drive like a Cobra, and I'm guessing that's the bigger meal ticket than the tiny .1 increase in displacement?

Re: is KB's 2.1 kit a 6 rib drive

to do a KB 2.2 and up will be like what you would have to do to put on a whipple and you will need to do part of the Eaton Swap, i don't know bout the 8 rib thing (haven't looked into that) so you will be spending some extra cash to do a KB 2.2 and up. really if your going to have to do a Eaton swap parts, i would go with a Whipple set up

Re: is KB's 2.1 kit a 6 rib drive

The KB 2.1 kit comes 6 rib. The KB 1.7 kit has long been discontinued. The KB 2.2 for the 03-04 Cobra is also discontinued and required all the parts one would need for an Eaton swap. The 2.2 kit that was made for the Mach 1 again is long discontinued (I bought the last one) and was also 6 rib. Any kit meant for the Mach 1 came 6 rib and you had to do your own modifying to make it an 8 rib. Not hard but required a little ingenuity. Whipple makes no kit for a Mach 1. Using a 2.3 Whipple or larger KB from a 03-04 Cobra requires all the parts you would use for an Eaton and when all is said and done will cost between $15,000-$20,000 to do it right.

To convert a mach blower to an 8 rib system, can you simply make everything else in the system 8 rib or would you hve to run a dedicated second belt/pulley system like a cobra? It would be nice to run everything off of one belt and keep the belt tension as close to the front main bearing without having a second pulley system tugging on the crank from so far forward?

Re: is KB's 2.1 kit a 6 rib drive

Also, how much boost are people getting out of the 2.1 before getting belt slippage on the six rib system?

Re: is KB's 2.1 kit a 6 rib drive

I'm running the 2.1 at 16psi on a 6 rib setup, except for the Innovators West 8 rib dampener. It requires monkeying around with the KB idler pulleys and a good, high strength tensioner to totally eliminate belt slip. I've had zero belt slip since getting these issues straightened out early on during the break-in process, and that's been about three years now.

Just for the record, Kenne Bell has ceased selling the 99-01 Cobra/03-04 Mach 1 2.1L complete kits due to Ford discontinuing manufacture of the lower intake that they used in the kit.
