driveshaft install

Just bought an FRPP aluminum driveshaft. I really want to install it myself but not sure what all is involved as far as steps, tools ,etc. I really want do this in my driveway. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Simple install. It will leak a bit of oil however so be ready. All you need is a 12pt socket and or wrench (I forgot what size exactly). Take out the 4 bolts in the back and pull the driveshaft out. You may also need to loosen or remove exhaust depending on your setup.

Replacing the drive shaft is fairly easy. Use the e brake to hold it from moving when breaking the bolts loose. Since there is not a lot of room, use two wrenches for more leverage (hook the round end into the open end). If there are paint marks on the new drive shaft, line them up with the marks on the new one. Put some Loctite on the bolts before putting them back in. It would notbe the first time thesebolt loosened up.

Should be noted those bolts have a 100lb ft on them. They can be challenging to get loose. I prefer a 12pt socket with a wabble extension and an impact.

Also recommend a little lock tight on those bolts when reinstalling.

I hit my wrench with a dead blow hammer to get em loose.

I only jacked the rear of the car up, lost hardly any trans fluid.

It makes it WORLDS easier if you have a helper to work the ebrake handle. Spin the DS or wheel around until you can get the wrench on a bolt, have helper put the ebrake on, get it loose and repeat.

With a helper we had it knocked out and on a test drive in an hour or less

Depending on the mileage of your Mach, it would be a good time to change the rear tranny seal. Also, lightly lubricate the shaft before re-install. Rear dif bolts are 12mm.

Not sure if you've done the swap yet, but a small propane torch is a must, heat a bolt up, then you can remove it easily. The thread lock is what holds it on. Melt it with the torch. I didn't loose any fluid, I had the rear jacked up.

Wow 100 ft/lbs is the torque spec? I use two wrenches connected together, and get them tight but not 100 ft/lbs. Yep 12mm, don't mistake it for a 1/2".

Well might be a little over zealous. My manual says 80-90. So if you dont use a tq wrech that just means tight as hell. I have had ones come loose with car years back and it wasn't fun. I toss some blue locktight on them. I keep extra 12mm 12 pt sockets around just in case.

I have changed my mustang driveshafts and never lost any fluid out of the tranny, I always only jack up the rear. Also I have never had to mess with the exhaust ever, once you unbolt the shaft you simply slide it towards the rear and out. I use a box wrench with a socket and extension over the bottom to give me a little extra torque, and instead of using the e brake to hold it I prefer to just stick the largest screw driverthat will fit through one of the flange holes and turn it until it contacts something enough to hold the force of removing the bolts. You can then get them out 2 at a time and just move the screw driver once rather then climbing back into the car a bunch of times.

To replace the lost fluid take your shifter out and pore with funnel on the driver side in the shifter. Better then finding something and getting under the car to the fill plug

Thanks for all of your help guys. I don't have the tools or time to mess with it. I just had pep boys do it. Picked it up this morning. Not sure if I'm feeling the difference from the lighter ds or just the smoothness of the new u joints. Mine were pretty bad. But either way it feels much better.

It only says it doesn't fit the cobra 4v which is true because the cobra shaft is different (shorter) The m4602j will fit any manual trans v8 from 96-04 besides the 99-04 cobras. I have it on my mach now also well as my previous Bullitt and GTs

Also this is probably the cheapest you will find one new plus you can use the discount code on top of this. But check your local craigslist first, I got one barely used for half the price so it may be worth it.
