Short throw shifter install

Hi guys. I finally got a short throw shifter for the Mach. I took advantage of the cyber Monday deals and bought one from American Muscle. I bought a SR Performance shifter for $75!

I also picked up a gasket set form Cobra Bob shifter gaskets, but it hasn't arrived yet.

I got some questions...
  • Do I remove the stops on the shifter? I've read in a few places that the TR3650 has internal stops. Is that BS?
  • Should I use some loctite on the bolts to the shifter handle AND the mounting bolts?
Any other tips?

Re: Short throw shifter install

I never removed the stops....BUT I have heard that the 3650 does internal stops as well.
that being said....adjust the shifter as if the trans DIDNT have internal stops.

I never used a gasket ever on shifter changes...BLUE RTV on the top of trans...done.
as far as lockite....up to you... I never did but you can.

oh yeah...make sure you transfer the little red/tan cup over from your stock shifter.

Have fun bangin gears!

Thanks for the info!

I've noticed that none of the aftermarket shifters ever come with that little cap or cup. I'm thinking some guys with higher mileage trannys might have a trashed cup and could use a new one. I just thought it was kinda funny lol.

Re: Short throw shifter install

I bought that as well got it today and installed it. It was pretty easy to install. Only problem I had was getting the shifter knob on, when it is screwed down as tight as it will go the shift diagram is upside down

So it was hard to screw down the stock knob all the way down? I noticed the stock shifter has a lot of threads.

It goes down all the way and is tight but it's upside down and I can't turn it anymore

Re: Short throw shifter install

Maybe you can add some sort of "filler" in the shift knob to take up some space so when you tighten it down the pattern will be correct.

You could try getting a jam nut. That way you would be able to tighten it with the jam nut when the knob is in the place you want it. I had to do that with my custom shift knob.

Hopefully you can see it in this pic. I got a fancy one from MGW's website. It was at the bottom of the shifter knob page on there website.

Re: Short throw shifter install

I've used a piece of a paper towel balled up, or also a small piece of a wood dowel to straighten the pattern out before.

I use RTV as well. Never had luck with the gaskets.

Re: Short throw shifter install

I put in a Cobra Bob gasket when I did a fluid change about 9 months ago. I get a wiff of ATF doing higher RPM shifts. Thought it might be leaking, have pulled the bezel several times to check, but nothing. I'm assuming I get that wiff cause of the gasket, so something to be aware of I guess, but I'd make sure to check for leaks if you notice it...better safe than sorry.

Re: Short throw shifter install

I'd use the gear oil resistant one. Its at autozone. Silver and green. Stands up to the synthetic atf a lot better than the other ones. I use the green for everything but exhaust which I use the copper.

Re: Short throw shifter install

I bought the same shifter awhile back, i used a jam nut to get the shift pattern lined up right. also i would suggest cutting a rubber gasket and placing it between the handle and the base to help eliminate vibration noise. i saw sve short throw shifter has one to help cut down on the noise.

I suppose I will have to apply, then wait overnight to let it set good..?

Thank for the links Larry. I've been using Mobil 1 synthetic ATF for a few years now. I found the lower fill amount here on the M1R. I'll have to make sure I don't booger up the inner boot when I take it off. I bet that needs some silicone..?

Re: Short throw shifter install

I just waiting on a gasket set from Cobra Bob.

Cobra Bob's stang shifter gaskets

Has anyone else used these? I've heard a lot of good things about them, but have never had my stock shifter off to need silicone or a gasket. I'm gonna pick up some silicone so I have it in hand when I go to install. I like options lol. I've seen on some forum threads where they used the gasket and silicone. I hope it comes today so I can install this weekend.

I have one and I like it. I have removed shifter to fill fluid and bolt shifter right back on. Did cut down noise a hair, but the price and performance is worth not having to scrape/reapply silicone..my 2 cents.

I have never used anything on rubber boot that goes over shifter, mine started wearing out and I took simple foam weatherstripping like you use on a door and put it around entire edge then bolted down with the 4 screws

Thanks, could be the fluid I used (Mobil 1 Syn ATF). Its kinda notchy when shifting cold, so been thinking of switching the fluid out with Syncrmesh. Will have to wait a few months since I jjust has surgery on my left elbow.

Will post back with results when I do.

Re: Short throw shifter install

I dont have a gasket on my shifter or a rubber spacer on the handle. I like the mechanical noise the car makes. I used some brand of DEX3 when I drained what I guess was RP out.

My gaskets did not come in today and I'm getting impatient. How long do you think I should let the silicone set before I go for a drive?

11 minutes LOL
When I put water pumps on large diesel engines it sets up as long as it takes me to re assemble the fromt end and fill with coolant.
