It's easier for 'most' people to fill the tranny via the shifter removal. It's the perfect thing if you are swapping shifters too.

Also, the correct fill amount is 3 Litres.

I used RP ATF fluid and never had a problem. One with stock shifter, the other with steeda tri-ax. Smooth as butter. If hte tranny is ok, I would keep with the RP ATF. if it is not, then I would use Bill's secret sauce.

IIRC syncromesh and ATF fluid are different. That may be where your problem was.

3L may equal 3.25 QTs...it's been a while since I've looked it up. LOL I just wanted to state that so there was no 'mental' stick on the QTs, when it is measured in litres.....Tis all.

Re: need 5spd tranny fluid recommendations

i am running the RP ATF and have no issues. The syncromesh is for other manufacurers manual trannys. Ford recomends ATF in there manuals so when I swapped fluids I stayed with ATF.

Yup, Chevron MD-3 (same as Havoline MD-3) is the shizzle.

You guys running RP are just throwing your money away on a product that will be blown away by relatively cheap Chevron/Havoline ATF.

MD-3 is better than M1 ATF too.

I had to dig this thread up because I'm hopefully going to be pulling my transmission out tomorrow and replacing the input shaft and pilot bearing. I hope to God that's all I need to do. Damned thing is now making a metallic rattling sound as opposed to the squealing and bird chirping it was doing earlier. Watch the heroes I paid to change out my clutch and TOB didn't install something right.

Speaking of, how hard is it going to be to change out the input shaft? I always love new and exciting learning experiences. And effing bloody knuckles. My hand may be broken as it is, so this is going to be even more fun.

Going to put the Kooks Catted X back on too (for emissions) and replace my melted O2 extensions while I'm under there. Figure I should also do an oil change and replace the fuel filter. I just needed to know what the magic mix was for tranny lubings. I printed it all out and will hopefully have happy good shifting times by tomorrow afternoon.

Just in time for a night of Gordon Beirsch Hefeweizen and some Hoegarden beverages.

Re: need 5spd tranny fluid recommendations

I think I might have to try out the M1M secret recipe. My trans has always been pretty notchy, but the main issues I have is the car doesnt want to go directly into 1st from a stop. I have to go to 2nd, then 1st or it will usually grind. Plus, my 1-2 shift, & 2-3 shift are pretty darn notchy. I hope this recipe helps....

I did it in my Mach over a year ago and did notice a difference. It wasn't huge but it did definately grind way less than it used to. It's a cheap thing to try anyway.

The only thing is, the fluid in my trans has less than 5k miles on it & its Mobil 1 synthetic??? I personally just think my tranny is shot, but I will give it a try anyway...

Are you still running the M1M secret sauce in your tranny?

Re: need 5spd tranny fluid recommendations

I called Tremec to get there opinion. I was told "Don't use synthetic fluids in the 3650". Also "IT's too slick and the synchronizers don't work as well." I then contacted my local Ford dealer and was told to review the TSB 04-15-6. The TSB says 3.0 liters of ATF. The head tech said over the years they have had good luck with the Lucas Trans fix. He told me to add a half bottle of trans fix in place of the same amount of ATF. The trans still has a total of 3.0 liters of fluid, and I did see a difference in the 1-2 shift as well as the 2-3. Also both Tremec and Ford said "do not over fill".

Thats odd. I do believe another member on here emailed techs at Tremec, and they specifically said they recommend only M1 full synthetic. Seems this might be one of those preference things, just who you talk to.

I stopped using that years ago actually. It was just too thick and took way too much driving before thinning out. I've been using regular non-synthetic fluid with no additives and it's been great. Better than the "sauce" for sure. This is a true review for years of experience whereas the other (sauce) was apparently only an overnight review.

Still running the same Havoline ATF that I put in over ten years ago to address the factory (over)fill issue reported back then.

Thanks, that explains why there hasn't been a lot of talk about it in the past few years.

I think I'm going with Texaco-Havoline when it warms up again. I was using Mobil 1 ATF and that was working pretty good, but I recently have had some issues with getting into gear and I only have about 20k on this tranny. I have Pennzoil synchromesh in there now and it's worse than the Mobile 1.

Here's the original thread from yesteryear where I first learned about this fix.

I give all credit to Golions for starting it.

Thanks for this. I couldn't find Texaco Dex 3 locally and went back to 3.2qts of Mobil 1 ATF. It was definitely better than the GM Synchromesh I had in there. Not sure why people were using Synchromesh, but I fell for it at the time and tried it. Now that its summer, I can really tell a difference, but I still want to go with Texaco Dex 3. I change mine about once a year, so I'm not worried about it not being full synthetic. I just need to find out where I can buy it lol.
