Re: Dirty 69 Pics

This is my '69 Mach 1 from back in the early '80s...

And while we're looking at the way back machine, this was my '73 'Vert. It had a 351 CJ 4V and 4 speed...

Re: Dirty 69 Pics

That was only one I'd ever seen. It had the factory round ball topped Hurst shifter, and the pain-in-the-behind dual point dist. w/vacuum advance/retard. What a pain that was. It got a ton of looks, but keeping the white interior somewhere close to clean was a job in itself. It was sold '81 to someone in the Houston area. The '69 Mach 1 is still local.

I owned a '68 1/2 California Special GT/CS that was an 390 'X' Code. A very good friend on mine owns it now. In the Mustang/Ford books out there, try and find the 'X' Code listed in the engine section. Unless the book has been printed recently, it does not exist. The 390 is a 4V engine that Ford/Mercury put a cast iron 2V truck intake on with the 'T' cast into the top. The good thing was that the 'X' Code did not have smog/emissions. Pull the 2V intake and install a 4V intake/carb and you've got a 390 GT engine. It's a big mystery why Ford and Mercury put these engines in around 500 Mustangs and Cougars. Here's a couple of pics of the GT/CS today:

Re: Dirty 69 Pics

I use as a reference the Mustang Monthly Recognition Guide for much of my information, and it lists the X-Code 390 2V. Print date; 1981. Farr, Dobbs, Heasley and the rest of the crew there were doing a great job long before it became a money machine.
Most people don't know a lot about such things, but there are still people out there working very hard to uncover many little known facts about Mustangs, as well as trying to keep the 'bad' information that is out there from becoming considered 'fact'. It's tough...

Re: Dirty 69 Pics

I have that same book and it is an excellent guide and probably the first to list the 'X' Code.

Re: Dirty 69 Pics

Oh man, LOVE the Machs.
OMFG I want one to be with my 03.

The dream would be to find one built on January 25, 1969, my birth date.

An R code with that build date, not sure what I'd sell to be able to buy that one. A pair of R codes in the drive, that would be nice.
