Shaker restore

Hey, just in case anyone wants to see it, I cleaned and painted the shaker on my 03 Black Mach 1 and I am VERY happy with the way it turned out.

Cleaned with Mean Green and a stiff nylon scrub brush (twice)
Used a blow dryer until completely dried and warm to the touch
Applied 1st coat of Rustolem Satin Black (allowed 1 hour to dry)
Applied 2nd coat of Rustolem Satin Black (allowed one hour to dry)
Applied 3rd coat of Rustolem Satin Black (allowd to dry 2 hours)
Reinstalled Shaker (stared at it for 2 hours) LOL

Re: Shaker restore

I did the Rustoleum satin about 3 years ago and it still looks as good as the day I did it.It's also not as "flat" as the origional and more closely matches the hood stripe. It's perfect.

Re: Shaker restore

Use Krylon Semi Flat paint. It's the perfect look, not shiny, not dull, perfect sort of satin. Looks like the spoiler on the back when you're done. The paint has a great spray valve too, so it lays out a nice fan spray for a goof proof application.

Yes, one can will be plenty. Painter's tip: Do all the hard to reach areas first (inside the openings, etc), then sweep the easy to cover areas. You don't want to spray into the tight reach spots once you have that smooth perfect finish on the easy coverage areas.

Re: Shaker restore

I'm going to buy an extra can and try and do the spoiler and chin spoiler. My chin spoiler is all torn up and I've got a few scratches on the trunk spoiler. I'm planning on detailing the car with a friend next week.

Well the chin spoiler can't get any worse. I was going to replace it again soon anyway. The spoiler I might just try some really fine grit sandpaper and see if I can get rid of the scratches. They were both pieces I was going to replace, so I figured I might as well experiment.

Re: Shaker restore

Restored my shaker using Krylon Satin Black

I also tried it on the spoiler. I sanded it with 2000 grit sandpaper...then I sprayed it with primer and found out I should have been using plastic adhesive promoter instead. I was running out of sunlight and didn't have enough time to sand the primer all off. I think the paint would have come out a lot nicer with more time. I think I'm going to re-sand the spoiler and try it again in a few weeks.

Applied the paint in very light coats. It feels slightly rougher than the the plastic on the spoiler, but I think it looks fine.

Old Shaker

Re-painted with Krylon Shaker

Scuffed spoiler

Re: Shaker restore

**** i would have just used a little of Mothers Back to Black instead of painting Just a little of that stuff and it lasts most of the year (depending on how often you wash the car and what you wash with). One bottle has lasted me 5 years now. works great on any black plastic trim (mirrors, cowl, chin spoiler, etc.)
