I think .030 sounds more ball parked, for Ford gears anyway. Did you check the thickness of your original shims/shims + pinion?

i know .030 is the "middle of the road" for ford rears.

that is next on the list. by eyeballing the shim it looks way smaller then .030.

Re: Got inside my 8.8....

getting some work done finally.

inner pinion bearing is on. and so are the carrier bearings.

Pinion Shim Size from Factory was .011" with my math i came up with the correct sizing being .0126" so i went with a 0.012" spacer

crunching numbers!

Pressing Bearings

going to get my TQ wrench from a friends house (everyone takes my tools)

then getting the ring gear on the carrier

also waiting on a call from Eaton to tell me what viscosity oil and if they like synthetic.

it wont be long now!

Nice build. Here's what remains of my Cobra cf traction-lok. Happened 3 weeks ago at Irwindale, best prep I've ever felt there. Gears and axles were ok. Was able to limp it home. Eaton Posi in now.

Re: Got inside my 8.8....

Not sure why these have been breaking. A friend's Bullitt broke one on drag radials, no less, at Lebanon Valley last June. Sure weren't the former weak link in Fox days....my FRPP Cobra unit has about 60 passes on it so it hasn't broken yet.

Clunk, clunk I can hear yours driving around. Did it lock up for a while?

sorry to hear it. but glad youve solved the issue.

the cobra diff cant hold that much (more) power for the price you pay.

not trying to start anything with anyone who has or had one. just my 2 cents.

eaton makes good stuff. the factory diff looks like plastic next to a true trac.

Tru Trac FTW!

I can relate to this thread, had my car towed today to have the rear rebuilt. Wish I had the resources to do it myself like you! All I have is a little parking stall at a condo complex though

Good luck on the rebuild!

Nice setup This is what mine looked like assembled two months ago. Should've painted it too, but I was anxious to get her on the road.

Re: Got inside my 8.8....

setting pinion preload...

the backlash is set at .007"

i set the pinion .001" deep into the rear end. this will help when the car launches and it pulls outward about that far.

trying to keep you guys posted!

Re: Got inside my 8.8....

had a problem with the Ratech Solid pinion spacer.

i was running the smallest shim (.010") and was not getting enough preload. i was only at 12.5 in-lb called them and im having one made .010" shorter so i can shim it back up to the right preload.

why does **** have to be such a *****?

for whatever reason this diff runs on the tight side.

Re: Got inside my 8.8....

Most of the time thats what it is going to to like if you do it right. Then again i did one once that all the numbers were perfect. However it whinned for a sec or two only at 3,500 rpm. I took it apart 3 times before i found the problem.
