I fixed my curbed wheel

Hello, Just wanted to share something that may help you other guys out. I did a stupid-o and nerfed a curb last week. See pics. The damage was isolated to the outermost wheel lip, but it was deep and ugly. I called some of the wheel repair places in St. Louis, and they all wanted more money to fix it than if I bought a new wheel. So, being Mr. Fix-It I decided to try and repair it myself. The result is absolutely flawless and it only took about 45 minutes. First, I masked off all the undamaged wheel areas adjacent to the actual damage with duct tape so I wouldn't accidently sand undamaged wheel. Next, I took a small wood block and wrapped 220 grit wet/dry sand paper (common for auto body repair at auto parts stores) and began slowly working the whole area down. After all the gouged aluminum was smoothed, I shifted to orange rubbing compound to get the aluminum back to the same luster as the rest of the rim. The final step was wax and sealer. I'm a perfectionist, and you can't tell there was any damage or irregularity to that wheel lip now. Hope this helps you save your wheel if you ever do some curb damage.

Re: I fixed my curbed wheel

Thanks guys, I hope you all give it a try. You will be amazed at how workable the metal is, just take your time. It's important to mask off any clear-coated areas that you don't want to slip and damage with sand paper, because your hand will slip while working the curve. These wheels are just too cool to not have them looking their very best.

Re: I fixed my curbed wheel

We have a local shop called Wheel Medic, I had them fix a set of HREs I bought for my wifes C5. I was going to fix them myself but they put them on a lathe and turned the lips for 25 a wheel and you couldn't tell they had ever been touched.

Re: I fixed my curbed wheel

This thread came alone at a good time. I am picking up a set of FR500's one comes with some curb rash and that doesn't sound very hard to get cleaned up. Nice job on your wheel OP

$25 a wheel is a very fair price... I'd have opted for that myself, but here in St. Louis the outfits wanted way over $100 just to touch it, so it was worth attempting a fix. I figured if I screwed it up, I'd would've just bought another wheel.

Re: I fixed my curbed wheel

Wow great post. I went right out and did my two curbed cobra rims this morning. Results were excellent and they certainly look better than before. In fact I have to take a close look to find my repair job. Outstanding idea EMach, saved me from having to buy a new rim! Is there an award for diy post of the year? Lol

Re: I fixed my curbed wheel

Wish this would work on mine. Previous owner smacked the crap out of a curb on two of the stock wheels, lip is chiped and very rough in some spots. Going to replace with the afs replicas with black instead of grey whenever the money gets saved.
