Re: Comp 106100 Cams Recently installed and not satisfied!!!

I would attribute the power difference of Kelly's and Ben's to a multiple amount of variables.

Since Kelly's HP curve goes from less than, to above Ben's at 6K and is slowly raising while Ben's is slowly dropping, I would imagine the Aviator engine in Ben's car may have featured cams a little more advanced?

Both combos had the same intake runner lengths, with the primary difference being the B Cams VS 99/01 Cams...and the headers.

Kelly's power curve did not change one-bit going from the stock to the B cams, so the 4-degree difference is not a factor.

It is either headers, gears (4.56 vs 4.10), or cam-timing.

Most dyno's I have seen with LT results, I don't recall the power curve shifting much.

Well once they were degreed at those specs i was told there wasnt enough clearance on the intake cams to safely run them without modified chain tensioners. The clearance was .0045. So the intake cams were retarded to 110. Well once the car was back together and all other supporting mods were installed (JLT intake, 90mm maf housing with Mach electronics, 03-04 cobra injectors, and ported intake from Todd that was already installed prior to) it hit the dyno and only made 347/324. They did mention that i was having a coil misfire and the maf was showing dirty at low rpm's and he said he couldnt smooth out. The coil misfire was on the #8 first then they swapped the coil to #6 and the problem switched to #6 so that meant it was the coil. Im gonna get another coil and change the plugs and see how that does. The car drives with a slight hesitation when driving especially below 3500-4000. Not a skip but like a hesitation. So we figure its the coil that is doing it. The car already had pullies, bassani midlengths and o/r x, and borla stingers along with 4.30's. All of us are trying to get it figured out. The torque should def be higher. It pulls very hard once it gets above 4000 rpms. Im not happy to say the least
If ur only making those numbers then I should be significantly lower then that with the tq feel of a Honda how mine are setup. Congrats on the install. Just get those issues fixed and it should be where its supposed to.

I didn't say 10rwhp in a header swap. I said 10rwhp left to find in the exhaust.

Kelly's combo made significantly less power from idle to 6000 before it started gaining and evenutually surpassing yours. See graph below.
Agreed, those two power-bands look pretty much exactly like I would expect in relation to each other given the slight intake cam duration difference and the header differences.

My engine was seeing 127-133% Load (calculated VE) at peak.

1 bad coil on a v8 will make it run like *****. You have torque loss due to that coil plug. Once it's replaced you'll gain plenty of it back

So how do you explain Kelly's combo making peak power at the exact same RPM, before and after a bump of almost 20 degrees on the intake cams?

Under the peak is where the biggest differences lie, and that's where the other variables make the largest impact. Some of it can probably be blamed on the cam timing, I'd guess your cams probably ended up retarded in relation to mine, before and after. Since I didn't degree mine, and I don't think you did either that's just a guessing game though. What I find odd about your 03/04 cammed graph is that the general shape of the curve looks like a 96-98 cammed graph, just with less power, which is weird.

I honestly think a good chunk of the differences can be attributed to the headers, 1-5/8" LTs vs 1-3/4" mid-lengths. 1-5/8" LTs should provide more mid-range and sacrifice a bit up top versus 1-3/4" mid-lengths.

The best headers for any combo are those that provide the most power in the desired RPM range. If you want peak power the 1 3/4" mids (no longer made) would be the best option but they give up mid range power. My choice for a cammed engine would be 1 3/4" x 32-34" primarys with a 2.5" collector. I believe the best option for a stock or cobra cammed combo are headers with 1 5/8" x 32-34" primarys and a 2 1/2" collector.

bigger is not always better.

What brands of headers fulfill with that, and the better fit.
