Does the C&L CAI use the MAF screen?

Does the C&L kit use the screen, or has anyone used it without the screen? Any stalling or idle problems with the screen removed? Thanks

Re: Does the C&L CAI use the MAF screen?

I'm running the C&L inlet tube and Cold Air kit (stock MAF/housing), and no MAF screen. My Mach is running the best it's ever had, no stalling, smooth idle.

One thing though, I do have my MAF angled about 30 degrees towards the engine. Sometimes rotating the MAF at different angles, rather than having it sit straight up, helps with the stalling/idle (due to the increased turbulence when not running a MAF screen with an aftermarket CAI). Don't know if this is the case with my situation, but never the less, my car is running great.

Re: Does the C&L CAI use the MAF screen?

I am using the complete C&L CAI with the C&L billet 85mm MAF housing with no screen and have had no stalling or idle problems. Like BlackMach posted, my Mach is running better than ever.

I have a complete C&L kit including 85mm MAF with no screen. With a tune, the car has never run better.

Thanks, I really like the look and I may just get one when I get a chance to get it retuned.

Re: Does the C&L CAI use the MAF screen?

Since the C&L uses an entirely new meter housing, it was designed to be run without the screen from day 1. That's why it runs fine without the screen.

The factory meter is "expecting" the screen to be there, so it will occasionally hiccup if it isnt there.

Re: Does the C&L CAI use the MAF screen?

Without the screen on, will it not suck up all kinds of bugs and crap? I think the screen is slowing my car down and was thinking about taking it off. Good idea or not? Had it tuned with it on, should i get another tune or not? Thanks

No, the air filter protects the motor, not the screen. If you have debris getting to the MAF, your filter is either missing or has a large hole in it. The screen is there to help control the turbidity of the flow past the MAF sensor. If you're still using the stock MAF housing, you should probably leave the screen in. I had a K&N intake on my car, and it never ran right without the screen, so I put it back in. The C&L comes with a larger MAF housing and is designed to run without the screen.

Why do you think it's slowing you down?

Re: Does the C&L CAI use the MAF screen?

I think I should be running alot better 1/8th mile times that 9.01 with all my mods. Something does not add up. I don't expect to run 7's with my mods, but should be hitting consitant 8.5's with a 2.0 60' time. I have only hit 2.1 60', and can't get under that with my street tires. I run a constant 9.20. I think removing the screen and wrapping the cold air intake with heat resistant header wrap should help keep the c&L cooler. Would getting a diff. air filter help any?(Should I get any brand or only c&L?) only been on for 10k miles. Opinions?

Re: Does the C&L CAI use the MAF screen?

You'll never go 8.50s with a 2.0 60'. I drove mine like it was stolen and on gatorbacks it went mid 8.60s to high 8.50s with low 1.90 60' times. On better tires it went 1.76 in the sixty and 8.20s in the 1/8. Only mods were C&L kit, catted X and 4.30 gears. Dyno numbers were 290/311 on a dynojet.

Re: Does the C&L CAI use the MAF screen?

The only cold-air intake system I had any issues with was the K&N setup... switched to the C&L system and have been happy ever since.

The C&L pipe will make your mach run a little bit leaner with a stock tune and aftermarket exhaust, for example... nothing that a dyno pull or two w/ a custom tune or predator couldn't take care of to optimize everything. I use an AEM wideband and predator to tune with and everything works great.

Machslammer, I was thinking about buying an S&B air filter to replace the C&L filter.... the S&B has a filter media on the front side, with a vortex cone on the inside. Anderson Ford Motorsport sells them, I use one on my 93's 80mm Pro-M meter but have yet to measure out the C&L one to get a replacement, but you could do the same. Not stating that's gonna make your mach quicker, but that it's just a nicer filter is all.

The coolest part about the C&L pipe is the cast-in bung, perfect for a nitrous nozzle!

Re: Does the C&L CAI use the MAF screen?

Ultraflo, Lee at C&L has dyno tested the filters with media on the front extensively, and has shown no gain in hp. They can, however, cause turbulence that leads to driveability concerns with a C&L meter. He has his filters custom made, and was planning to use that style if it made any HP, but in his testing it didn't.

I'm using the C&L kit with the stock MAF still (bought this from RPM Outlet). I've not had any problems with this, and the car runs great!

Thanks for that bit of info... that'll save me the hassle.

Does the C&L intake tube bolt right up to the stock MAF/filter setup?

Re: Does the C&L CAI use the MAF screen?

It was not designed to use the stock airbox. If you prefer to use the stock meter, they make a kit to accomodate that. It's best to just call C&L at 256-882-6813 and talk to them directly.

C&L cold air kit with stock MAF....no screen. Been driving it for 2 weeks now, no problem. Anywhere from 15-65 degrees outside, no rough idle, hard starts, etc.
