Diesel like sound till warmed up

My car's valve train(I think) rattles a lot until the car gets to operating temp. It is not a consistent sound. It sounds like a diesel engine to me. That part may be the normal 32 valve for a 1st start engine.

Lately there is a more distinct rattle kind of sound while the car is warming up. This does not sound like a tick. More like a valve wobbling in its guide. ( I am not a mechanic so it could be anything. It occurs at low rpm.s only, not idling or medium to high rpm's.

It does not last but a second or so and goes away.

Given that I hear nothing at idle or higher rpm, maybe its just something loose.

Have any experienced anything like this?

Thanks

I think it may have something to do with the cam timing chain on cold startup.

If you used a Fram oil filter for you oil change, that may be the problem. I had a cold knock on my '03 Cobra after I let them put a Fram filter on during an oil change. The manual said to use the Ford filter (of course) to prevent cold knock, but it was not BS to sell filters. It went away when I put the right filter on. I think it has something to do with the bypass valve in the filter. I have not even checked my Mach owner's manual, but I assume it is the same.

I changed mine to 5/30 full synthetic motor oil and that helped mine at cold starts..

Yes I have that noise also. Lasts for about 1 sec until oil pressure comes up. I always use motorcraft filters on my oil changes. My 02 gt did it, too, just not as bad.

I have had 2 oil changes, both done at the dealership. One at 500 miles and one at 3000 miles. Used the Ford 5w20 oil.

The valve train makes a good bit of noise until the car warms up a to operating temps. This is probably normal 32v noise, but is much more pronounced than say my 5.0 was.

The other noise is really hard to describe. It sounds like a vibration type of noise. It sounds sort of like the rattle you get if you let a clutch out at too low rpms and the engine chokes a little.

This noise goes away once the engine temp is in its normal spot on the guage. It is like at certain rpm's there is a rattle in the chain or valves. It sems to happen less if I am very easy on the gas till warm ( shifting at lower rpm's ). I am not pushing the engine at all here, just normal shifting etc.

I think I have a loose valve assembly, but hehe I am no mechanic. Considering it all goes away when warm, I may be overly concerned.

I should note this is the only 4.6 that I have driven or ridden in and have no basis for what is normal with them.

Anyway I have a long warranty at worst.

Thanks

Question regarding valve noise

I have a 2003 mach 1 with 5 spd that was built last November. The symptoms your car has fits my cars symptoms to a tee. I have owned a 96 GT with the 4.6 liter SOHC and it did not make these noises. However I understand the DOHC motors make alot more valve noise since there are 4 valves per cylinder rather than 2. I have a friend with a 2003 mach 1 with the automatic and he does not have the engine valve noise. I wonder if the noise is more noticeable only in the 5 speeds. I do not plan on doing anything about the noise unless it gets worse. How many miles do you have on your car? I have only 1500

I have a little over 4000 miles on mine. I also plan to just keep an eye on it. While this is enough to bother me, I am sure a dealer would probably normal noise for a cold engine.

The other noise at mid rpms will be hard to show a dealer since the car has to be cold and goes away pretty quick. It only occurs for several minutes after start.

They will take care of it if it gets worse and it runs well once warmed up.
