New LCD TV and Xbox 360

I got a new 40" LCD television for Christmas, but something isn't right. When I play Xbox, everything is kind of blurry. The letters seem to have slight motion and the overall picture of it kind of sucks. Anyone have a problem like that? I tried going into the settings of the Xbox to set it to 1080p because I guess that's what the television has, but all I got was a blue screen and then it reverted back to it's original setting, 480p.

Do I need better cables or something?

I don't really know anything about TVs so that doesn't help.

EDIT: I read something about HDMI cables, is that what I need?

HDMI is what you need for 1080p.

Re: New LCD TV and Xbox 360

you can get by with the in-the-box component cables currently...that'll do 720p/1080i til you can get a hdmi cable for 1080p

Re: New LCD TV and Xbox 360

HDMI cables are the way to go and you need to check if your TV has any adjustments for games. Some have different filters that help with any lag or blur you see from them.

Re: New LCD TV and Xbox 360

The problem was that I had the RWY cables plugged in, not the RGB and the RW for sound. So I plugged in the RGB cables, set it for 1080p on the Xbox settings, and flipped it to HD instead of TV.

It's nice and crisp now. I'll still get the HDMI cables.

Re: New LCD TV and Xbox 360

Something else worth checking- most new HD TV's(especially LCD's) will have a "Games Mode" that helps with faster reaction times during fast paced changes on the screen.

The quality and reaction times seem to be very good now that the right cables are being used. The game looks phenomenal on the new TV.

Re: New LCD TV and Xbox 360

Glad you got your problem solved. You'll definitely want to get the HDMI cable, but the biggest problem with most of the LCD and LED/LCD tv's is their refresh rate isn't fast enough for a lot of motion on the screen. I think the rates for the best ones are around 240Hz with most being 120Hz or less whereas a plasma refreshes over 700Hz if memory serves me correctly. It's probably not enough for most people to notice however, unless you have the plasma and the lcd sitting right next to one another.

Whatever you do, don't waste your money on a Monster HDMI cable. Check out monoprice or bluejeanscable to find good cables.

Re: New LCD TV and Xbox 360

I have a 360 hooked up to a 1080p LCD. I have tested both the composite and HDMI and there is no noticeable difference between the two. Just giving you a heads up so you don't waste your money on an expensive cable expecting a dramatic difference. Definitely steer clear of the monster cables...pure waste of money.

Re: New LCD TV and Xbox 360

Make sure you have the standard av cable the xbox comes with set to HDTV(there is a slider at the base where the cable connects to the xbox). It can be slid to either tv or hdtv. If you have it set to tv it will only work in 480p. If you set it to hdtv then you can use 720p or 1080i.

600hz for plasma....but plasma gets better with faster hertz....lcd gets better in one aspect and gets worse in another

there is a difference, just most people dont notice.

1080P will produce a smoother picture than 1080i

I was just going to get like a $6-10 one so if there's no real difference, it's no real money wasted.

Re: New LCD TV and Xbox 360

Yea, there is no difference at all in cables. I think I read an article on cnet, where they tested different hdmi cables at different lengths, and their solid conclusion was it is a TOTAL waste of money to pay 40-100 bucks for a 6ft cable. It's just too easy to get talked into buying a "quality" cable when your making your first hdtv purchase. The sales staff get you thinking that you'll basically waste however much you spent on your tv, if you don't have the best cables. What a crock.
