I'm HOME!!!

Just thought I would share some excitement on my part. Just finished my 4th and last deployment to the Middle East. My incredibly long flight home ended this morning and I am so glad to be home. Alot of people asked me what I was gonna do when I got home. Honestly...I couldn't see past the little things we take for granted on a daily basis. A private shower, my own bed, cooking again, driving my own car not waiting hours for a duty driver to go anywhere, own bathroom sink etc etc. Jet lag is kicking in and gonna hit the bed before long and been dreaming about it this entire deployment. Living comfortably is so important and you dont even realize it till you dont have it. -Shane

Outstanding!!! Just in time for the 2011 Summer Scorcher Series, we can use the help. We need to get back to the good SMAF days and a few more road events.

Thanks Jester....my next move is an 04 Lightning as soon as the Cobra is paid off. Then I will have three 04s. What a great year Ford had! I just dropped over 10 grand in mods on the Cobra this deployment. She got a new FR Aluminator long block to go with the KB, new powder coated tanks, coil-overs, K-member, SCT3 tuner and some other goodies. Came accross an 04 DSG Cobra decklid also for the Mach1. Yes I am changing the looks of the Mach1..lol. Pretty sure I will also be going with a 99Cobra front bumper eventually. -Shane

Re: I'm HOME!!!

Once again I appreciate all the welcome homes, means alot.

Thought I would share something else...nothing crazy cool but meaningful I guess.

There are several groups that take time out of their day to email and/or send care packages to our Military members that are deployed. Cant even begin to tell you how much that means to our guys. I sent a thank you to a teacher out in New Mexico for going above and beyond. We become great friends and our crew and two of her classes interacted through two deployments. She told the story to a deployed service member who writes about Patriotism. This morning I got this link and thought it was worth sharing. World is a much better place due to people like this teacher. -Shane

That is very cool, Shane. During the first Gulf War, DESERT SHIELD/STORM, we would get "Any Serviceman" packages from people and it was great and a little touch of home. The deal was every letter or package you opened, you had to answer, and we did. For some reason back then the word must have gotten out there was a toilet paper shortage in the Middle East as every package had some in it. I would tell them thanks and mail some of the tissues in the MRE packages back to show them we had plenty.

I gained several pen pals from those letters and packages. One was a little second grade boy from Illinois whose whole class was writing us. Eventually his Mom and Dad were writing me too and the whole family would send me a package once a month. His Dad would send me a letter early and say to check the "false" bottom in my forth coming package. Later when the package arrived with cookies, powdered Gatorade, wet wipes, suntan lotion and such there would always be a Playboy Magazine hidden in the false bottom of the box.

Magazines of that nature were strictly forbidden in the the AOR but it made me one of the most popular guys in our camp the last few months I was there. Prior to that ALL the magazines were censored. We'd get People, Redbook, Popular Science/Mechanics magazines, Sports Illustrated and if there was an advertisement or picture of a women in anything other than a full length gown they would either tear the page out or use a black magic marker to black out all but their face. When we got the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue, the cover was blacked out and there like six pages of spring training baseball scores and that was it.

There used to be stores in Saudi called "747 Stores" where you could buy cassette tapes (hey, this was 1990) and I remember looking at Dolly Pardon, Janet Jackson, and any other female singer and they'd have the cassette cover photo blacked out with a maker pen. One of the first things I did when I got back to the states was go to the music store in the mall and look at cassette tape covers.

I've warned the SMAF Herd to be on the lookout for you in the spring.
