Was this guy trying to scam me? You decide

So i put an ad on craigslist offering my motorcycle up for sale for $9500 and i get this email reply:

Hello, I may be interested in your Night Rod. Would you consider $9000? Do you have the title or would we need to settle with your bank? I ask because I live in Columbus and guessing it may take a little longer to deal with your bank if you don't have title in hand. I'm going to do a loan so my bank will want some info first too, like vin number etc. Anyway let me know if $9000 works for you and we'll see if we want to move forward.
Thanks
Mike

My reply back:

Thank you for the reply. The bike is paid off with the title in hand. I would suggest that you come take a look at it and we can discuss the price at that time. I will assist in any way that your bank may need.

His second response:

The bank says they need:
VIN number
Mileage
Sellers name, address, and phone
A copy of the title (maybe you can take a picture of it and email)

They listed these things online. I'll give them a call to follow up my online application (which is approved) after I get the info from you. After I've done that we can make arrangements to see the bike. I'm thinking if we do a deal you could cash my check at a Chase bank near you and I may rent a trailer to haul the bike home to Columbus .

And mine:

Sure Mike, no problem. Send me your banks phone number and the loan officer's name and i'll provide all of the information that you listed to him/her.
Bill

And then finally on the next day (Monday):

Bill, sorry but I found another bike locally so I won't be purchasing yours. Sorry for the inconvenience and good luck to you. Take care.
Mike

Honestly i'm 50/50 on whether this was legit or not. It seemed odd to me that the guy wanted me to send him a copy of the title along with my personal information without any inquiry about the bike itself or trying to arrange a time to come and see it. It was also odd that within one day he finds another bike after my response asking about his bank info and who to speak with.

Legit or not legit? What do you guys think?

Re: Was this guy trying to scam me? You decide

Seems pretty fishy to me. Especially how he backed out when you wanted to give the info directly to his bank instead of him.

Re: Was this guy trying to scam me? You decide

Normallly, by the sounds of it, it might be legit.

Usually you can tell by the wording, that is not legit. Most of the time they start out with Consider it sold, do not sell to someone else, or they offer more than you are asking....or sending a shipper, etc...

I would probalby ask the same questions, the bank would need the info to get a loan. The banks are getting pretty specific anymore with loans....

But I would definitely let you get in touch with my bank about it, etc....if it was legit....

Good luck selling, but definitely protect yourself and always ask if unsure!!

Re: Was this guy trying to scam me? You decide

I just think he jumped the gun and got to far ahead of himself trying to make the deal happen ASAP..!!?? If your in hot pursuit to get a Night Rod, your going to be jumping on the first listing you find. But continue to look for other listings. Being that Columbus is 4 hrs away, He may have actually found one around the same asking price, but without an 8 hr round trip drive..!!?? No matter what info he was requesting, the check would have to clear your bank first before transfer of the title. You and him would have to go to your bank together to sign over the title and have it noterized.

Just my opinion Bill. But it's good to be cautious like you did.. I can understand being suspicious of this.

Im gona say it's legit because even if you did send him all the info he asked for, I don't see what he could do with it to rip you off.

When I bought my Mach, it was 2 hrs away. The credit union wanted all that information plus they called and talked to the guy.

But they wanted me to drive 2 hrs back, bring them the title and then drive 2 hrs BACK to get the car.

Luckily, I went to school with the guy at the credit union and he told me what to put on the title at the DMV. (credit union code for the lien).

So, it sounds legit to me. Now if he had wanted to send a cashiers check for more than the amount.......

I would at least need a deposit before giving all that info.

I'm kinda surprised they didn't ask for your dna and addresses of relatives the way these banks have screwed everyone over then blamed it all on us...

Of course since this was credit union explains why they went easy on ya....

You did the right thing, no way I would send all that info straight to a stranger. Personally I've never had a bank need a copy of the title, just the vin, mileage and maybe a picture.

I didnt have to have a copy of the title, they just wanted to know if the guy had the title. And the guy gave the info to my bank, not me.

With all the scam now a days, people have to be careful. But all the info they ask for, most of the time is public info. Heck, now they can get your credit rating with your telephone number.

Re: Was this guy trying to scam me? You decide

My buddy just sold 2 vehicles on ebay, both Direct Bank Transfers (Probably safest, since the transactions cannot be reversed). One from Georgia and the from Japan. Both sent shippers to pick up the vehicles after the money was transferred and the paperwork was recieved.

He just got an email from the guy in Japan that he received his 60's GMC truck and loved it!! It took about 20 days to finally get there.

Re: Was this guy trying to scam me? You decide

most banks/credit unions are now asking for copies of the title. I just bought mine this week and went through penfed.org (awesome rates btw) and before they would send me the check I had to get a copy from the seller and fax it to them.

Probably just splitting hairs here but, its the "after i get the info from you" that makes it seem scammy to me. An unsuspecting person might just send it all to him.
