How high to rev at the strip?

I have a tune in my Mach and I have noticed the rev limit was increased. I was going to leave at 7k on 2 step, but wasn't sure how high everyone had been turning their car at the drag strip. Where does power stop in a stock motor and where do things get dicey?

Re: How high to rev at the strip?

7k!?! If you don't have a 31 spline rearend. I wouldn't go past 3500. And if you have stickys the motor will bog at a 7k launch.

The motor won't bog at 7k. You want to launch closer to peak torque. If your suspension and everything is set up well, you'll cut better short times at a bit lower rpm.

Re: How high to rev at the strip?

On a stock car a 3000-3500 launch and shift out at 6000.

Shifting at 6 on a stock car is losing on soooo much power. I went from 13.7 (shifting at 6k) to 13.2 by shifting at 6700 on my 1-2 then 6500 on the rest when I was a bolt on car. I launched at 5.5k, stock rear end didn't like that, snapped an axle and stripped the spider gears after about 40 passes. I launched at 5.5k on my built rear end all day no issues though!

Re: How high to rev at the strip?

Tried holding out for more revs (at the suggestion of Scott Hoag) and lost a few 10ths when I did. It was hot and humid the days I ran, so that may have had some effect.

I have 31 spline rear end qa1 coil covers with adjustable uppers and lowers on big and skinnies with biased plays. I shifted around 6500 to 6800 but was losing time compared to shifting at 7. I had been leaving around 4500 on radials but had to slip the clutch since 5500 and up would spin hook and get me big mph. Below would bog. I got new rubber a new two step and want to go quicker. I'm in low 8's 1/8 mile just seeing if anyone has cranked higher than 7k between shifts and if there were any benefit.

Re: How high to rev at the strip?

As with comparing car color, you will get more than a few different answers here. Here's mine(haha), I launched at 6K and shifted at 6200 into all gears(except 5th of course). This was with 26x9 Hoosier slicks, a built rear, adjustable struts/shocks, exhaust, and driver mod which netted the 11 sec pass in my sig.

I like your answer the best. I have tried 6000 shift in first. You have a k member and control arms up front? What gears too?

4.30s, UPR K member/A-arms, 14" 175 lb coil over springs. Look at your dyno sheet and find peak HP then add 200 rpms and that will be (YOUR) shift point. Once you shift the next gear will pull the rpms down to around peak torque. You should feel yourself being pushed into the seat until you lift after the last cone on the track

That's it for HP mods. Everything else is suspension. Poly motor/trans mounts almost forgot the aluminum drive shaft and MGW shifter. I'm contemplating a ported intake and cams or some carbon fiber look good pieces.

I would recommend milling the heads and regrinds over porting the heads. Would definitely help. I think I am going to go orange handle over the silver I have currently. Thanks, for giving me a good benchmark. Will have 1/8 times in 2 weeks. I'll post what I get.
