top end

My car is all stock minus JLT intake with 84,xxx miles. It seems to run out of steam around 5,500 rpm but pulls hard from 3,000-5,500ish. Is that normal? I know these cars are set up for low end torque. What Mods improve top end power with out killing bottom end?

Re: top end

I eventually want to add boost ie- centri or eaton swap. But right now that doesnt fit the budget. I want to do small upgrades in the mean time like exhaust, injectors, coils, some suspension (upper and lower control arms, sway bars, strut braces, remove isos.)

Headers help with top end. The brands with larger primaries help the most but are also the most expensive. Good mod if you can install yourself otherwise its pretty pricey.

On a budget id get a midpipe, gears, and tune. Then save up for boost.

Re: top end

Thank you 828. I dont want to do gears though, I like my decent gas mileage.

Re: top end

The curve of any motor(without variable valve timing) is pretty set. Yes, 1 7/8" primary headers will help up top, but otherwise you have to address how your motor's parts use incoming air. That would be your intake manifold, heads, and cams. Heads seem to be fine even for higher hp builds, but your intake manifold and cams are what give you that low end torque. A used, shortened intake and used 96-98 cobra cams are a fairly budget friendly start to more top end.

That being said, move your power curve up in the rpm range, and you'll have to bite the bullet on gears. Less low end, means you need to stay in the upper rpm range to compensate, which means you need 3.90+ gears.

Motor may be getting a little "tired". When they were new they'd pull like crazy another 1,000 rpm than that and relined at 6800.

Re: top end

I agree with Bill. I shifted out on track at 6 grand and Scott Hoag even suggested trying 6300-6500, although I found it fall off after 6.
