03 Mach 1 engine advice needed

My Mach is burning oil, car has 150000 miles, its time for a rebuild. I plan to supercharge it in the near future.
I read thru a few threads and there is a lot of diff answers.
So what will my motor need to be supercharger ready?
I would like to get 500 ponies.
Do I only need forged pistons and rods?
I found a used 03 cobra short block for about 2k with crank and
Pistons, would you guy recommend the used short block?
Or how bout just replacing the pistons with used 03 cobra pistons?
Basically I would like to know what I need to bullet proof the Mach 1 engine for supercharging. What needs to be replaced internally.
Thanks you

As far as I know for the 500hp range is rods, pistons, oil pump, fuel pump, injectors, tune + supercharger = good times.

Re: 03 Mach 1 engine advice needed

for 500 hp; it is pretty easy. If you put an 03 cobra in it, it will have lower compression pistons. Keep the stock pistons, it is easy to make power with higher compression with less boost. Get forged pistons/rods/new rings, etc. But, you may need to have your blocked bored, get that done and then get the correct sized components for the block clean up the is done. Your crank, if in a manual mach, is the same as in the cobra. Your heads are also the same.

To make 500 you will need bigger injectors and a bigger fuel pump.

Re: 03 Mach 1 engine advice needed

TKat13 you mentioned keep the stock piston, so do you mean purchase forged pistons that have the same specs as my stock pistons?
Yes I have manual Mach 1.
Is there a specific type of oil pump that I will require??
Thank you guys
For all the help and information

Stock compression spec, but forged. You OE pistons are junk for boost. Glad you mentioned oil pump, yes you will want a billet gear oil pump. Some say they have been fine with it; but I have seen to many fail and ruin a new motor.

I made the mistake of going low compression and first chance I had I went back up in compression.

I should have asked; what is your budget? Depending on your budget; consider new valve springs, freshen up your heads, etc.

Re: 03 Mach 1 engine advice needed

Depends on your budget. If you do it right, and try to pull the most power you can from the build, the parts add up quick. I'm way over what I thought I'd spend on my engine build.

If I had known how much I was going to spend I would have probably done a Coyote/6r80 swap instead. Or just sold the Mach and picked up a coyote.

If you are on a budget the cobra shortblock isn't a bad idea.

Re: 03 Mach 1 engine advice needed

I kinda have a budget and kinda don't, with that said depending on how much I spend it will influence how long it will take for me to get the supercharger,I'm not trying to build a dragster, I mainly will be daily driving and for the most part do time attacks.

I would like to just get it up to 500 HP,
Will I be able to swap over all my components to the short block? What kind of work will the short block require?

I have been looking at pistons and rods, which brand is recommended? I need the ones that say stock bore, right?
Thank you guys
Sorry for all the questions this is my first time doing something like this.

Check out my parts list and then post up what additional questions you have.

Re: 03 Mach 1 engine advice needed

A decent budget build imho would be (once the block is cleaned up and measured) to get some quality forged pistons, find a set of either terminator or boss connecting rods and use ARP2000 hardware on em (also check out Molnar technologies connecting rods, hearing good things abouth their strength and pricing on mod fords). As mentioned if its a stick car the crank is plenty strong. The terminator/aluminator pistons arent the most robust things in the world.

dont let em talk you into a bunch of port/polish work on the heads, just get a valve job to clean em up along with valve seats and guides. If theyre 4 thread might consider lock n stitch inserts (make sure they use aluminum inserts). As mentioned new oil pump, billet gears, Id put in all new timing components as well at that mileage.

as for the used short block - if you plan to go with a PD blower and can have someone who knows what theyre doing check it over it might not be a bad idea but its gonna be a DOG any other way.

Re: 03 Mach 1 engine advice needed

The lock n stitch inserts are so pricey. For the money you might as well just get 9 thread heads. I have a set of fresh 01 heads, but now I'm considering just having OD valves and a valve job done on my 04 9 thread heads. Its almost the same price as getting inserts put in the 01s.

Re: 03 Mach 1 engine advice needed

if youre not doing the assembly its probably better to let the shop get the parts. That way if theres any issues with anything its on them
