A Possible sad goodbye to the Mach...

Well folks, it seems as though I may have to part with my beloved Mach. I absolutely adore our Mach, but the wife and I are dealing with a practicality issue that is just eating us alive.

The Mach sits stored right now w/ 18 thousand miles on the clock. We put a grand total of 4 thousand miles on it last year and traveled to Seattle one time. During that drive the Mach showed me it's best.... and sadly it's worst. Getting 28 miles per gallon is fantastic. Finding a comfortable seating position is impossible for me. I had extensive knee surgery 10 years ago and I need to be able to fully extend my leg every 30 minutes or so to relieve some of the pain in my knee. Sadly with my 6'1" frame, I cannot get it done in the Mach.

Last night the wife and I stopped by the local ford dealer and had a sit in the new Mustangs. I fit in it like a glove. I was able to fully extend my left leg and the seating position was just fantastic.

I did not get much sleep last night as the thought of parting with the Mach is just something I never thought about. Now, it seems as though this may become a reality.

For those who have moved on to the newer Mustangs, does the new pony ease the pain of losing the Mach, and do you regret getting rid of the Mach.

Understand please that "racing" "horsepower" and the such don't really pertain to why I love Mustangs. So losing the 32v really does not play into any decision we make.

*sigh*

Re: A Possible sad goodbye to the Mach...

Well i'm sorry to hear you may have to part with your mach although my experience with the 05 and 06 mustangs have been extremely good i had purchased a 06 mustang with the V 6 for my 16 year old son and the car was great until he totalled it with 5000 miles on it. I also have a good friend that has a 05 gt and have drivin it on several occasions and will tell you it is very close to the mach in every aspect. I love the mach ones and will not get rid of mine even when i by the gt 500 so if you have any doubt i would see if you could get the new stang and keep the mach for one of youre kids when they are responsible enough to drive it,unfortunitely i jumped the gun by giving my 16 year old the new car when i should have gave him a hoopty for his first ride.

Re: A Possible sad goodbye to the Mach...

Well the Mach 1 is perhaps one of the finest SN95 Mustangs ever built, and has a character all its own, well balanced and superb looks. The S197 Mustangs are virtually superior cars in every way, and they should be, being a new car from the ground up. No shame at all going to the new car my friend. I myself find it hard to resist the new pony from time to time. I know for me though, selling the Mach 1 is just not the right move and I would regret it immensely. If you fit in the new car, I say jump on it! Good luck.

What good is the Mach if you can't enjoy it? No shame in moving on.

Re: A Possible sad goodbye to the Mach...

Leaving speed out, the new Mustangs are head and shoulders above our Mach's. They ride better, have more interior room, color on the interior, only 5 less HP, they look good and best of all 300 HP on "87 octane" Take a lot of pictures of your Mach 1 for keeps sake and go order that 2007 auto GT you'll be a lot more comfortable.

Bill

they take 93 octane as well...

Im 6'2" and I can scoot the seat back and extend both my legs all the way....maybe you just need to get the seat yanked out, new holes drilled or seat rail extenders and have it reinstalled to move it back farther. Ive sat in several s197's...and in my opinion they halved the interior room...most s197's i look at have the back of the front seat touching the front of the back seat with no room inbetween...

im not seeing the roominess...just my opinion

Re: A Possible sad goodbye to the Mach...

Dfanucci,

Sorry to hear that you may have to part with your Mach, but the s197 GT will ease the pain and probably wind up giving you just as much enjoyment (maybe) to drive. As previously posted in this thread, I could really stand to move my driver's seat back further myself either by using rail extenders or by drilling new seat mounting holes. Either way, best wishes.

Re: A Possible sad goodbye to the Mach...

I don't get it, I'm 6'1 and I slide my seat foreward after I get in. I have a back injury from when I was in the 82nd, so I have to slide the seat back and tilt the seat back to get in and out. Anyway it has already been pointed out that the new totally redesigned car are better in most ways. I would sugest renting a new mustang far a short while to see is they are comfortable for the long hauls.
I personally would not trade. Everyone asked my why I did not wait for the "new" mustang and I tell them I bought my car because I could not stand the look of the new mustang. I went in to the local dealership to look a the Ford GT they had and the salesman pointed to the GT500 that and said we have one of these it has 500 hp. I told him I didn't care if it has 1000 hp it is still ugly to me. Anyway to each his own, I think the mach 1 has more character and will never get rid of it.

Re: A Possible sad goodbye to the Mach...

Guys, trust me, this decision is absolutely killing me. I love our Mach. Period.

I have thought about the rail extenders, but I was under the impression that it actually makes you sit higher in the car. I think stock we sit high enough in them. Getting in and out of the car is a piece of cake and does not enter into our decision at all. This is mearly a legroom issue. If I had 1 or 2 more inches of rearward travel it would be perfect. I got by the issue somewhat on the road trip by shoving me foot up under the dash but that still did not allow me to fully extend my leg. Sh*t, maybe I'm part thoroughbred (all leg) because I cannot see how anyone over 6 feet can extend thier leg fully.

Our decision is not made as of yet. FWIW the local dealer told me it would be a stretch to give me 19K for the Mach. He states that wholesale Machs are going in the 16k to 17k range. This dealership is a piece of work. 3,000 mark up on all 2007 GT's

Ummm, nope.

Re: A Possible sad goodbye to the Mach...

Keep the mach and buy a daily driver you can get something nice for 7,000
that will get from a to b plus the mach will not lose as much value as a 07 gt.

Re: A Possible sad goodbye to the Mach...

Okay folks here is where we stand.

I have a call in to a local body shop that wants me to bring the car by. If they can extend the rails which will allow a little more rearward travel. The Mach is going nowhere.

Thanks for the support and ideas folks! It's this kind of stuff that makes this the best darn mustang site on the web.

btw... my inseam is a 34... or a 36 depending on which way Im hangin'

Re: A Possible sad goodbye to the Mach...

Here's an kooky idea:
Although I would also hate to sell my Mach 1,
a new S197 isn't a bad alternative.
The dealer markup is easily bypassed.
Get ahold of Joe Charles at Parkway Ford,
and see if he can get you a deal on a new 07 GT.
If he can. fly or drive (maybe sell your mach locally) to Georgia,
pick up your new Stang,
and get to know "her" on a nice long trip back home.

Glad to hear there may still be a chance to save the Mach afterall. I too am 6'1" with a 34 inseam and have no issues with legroom but without a bum knee I can't speak for your experience. Good luck!

Same here and @ 240ish lbs.(big boy). I have some issues with my left knee at times but I fit the Mach alot better than my daily driven '90 GT w/5 speed. Of course I'm only 39ish so that may change when I get a little closer to Bp's age.

Here's a link to a driver's seat mod that doesn't require new rails and may add a couple of inches of rearward adjustment:
