Old plugs black and dirty on one side - 2003-04 Mach 1 Registry Owners Club

I just changed my plugs in my Mach which only had 11,200 miles on it and the drivers side plugs where black and carbon up while the passenger side looked pretty good. i am getting it dyno tuned this week any thoughts on the cause?

Could be a couple of things....mods? tune?

Blackened plugs could be oil or running rich in that/those cylinders. Since you said 'carbon' I would guess rich, but ??? Can you take pics of the plugs?

I think that's everything....

If it's only rich on one side it's probably an upstream O2 sensor on the way out.

Agree.

Data log the O2 Voltage and trim. If the trims are slow or not changing the O2 is bad.

The trims should be within 2% of each other. For example, if Bank 1 trims are 1, then Bank 2 should not be more than .98 or 1.02, but that is an extreme since they will be within 1% of each other.

If not, change the O2s or look for an exahust leak.

Maybe I'm going blind in my old age of 30 (

), but all 8 appear to be blackened with carbon and with only 11k miles.

I'm not at all saying the O2s aren't bad and shouldn't be looked at, but who did your tune? What does your A/F ratio look like?

I'd have to agree with pony. It might be a bad picture but all the plugs look to be the same.

Sorry about the photo... They all where black but the drivers side was just a little worse. I have the standard SCT tune but did have an exhaust leak when I installed my X-pipe that is fixed now.

is the side that was worse the side that had the exhaust leak?

reminds me of my plugs.

but im tuned rich as fug because im boosted.

edit: i am unsure what my current plugs look like. but when i took my plugs out after i had let the engine run on the stock plugs mine looked exactly the same.

as long as your not misfiring and your o2 sensor readings check out i wouldn't worry about it.

Sensors probably picked up a lean from the leak and tossed a bunch of fuel at it.

I woudl get your A/F checked even if this is all fine and dandy. WIth the mods you have and the 'standard' tune, there is a chance you are running lean at WOT.

nah judging by the plugs id say rich and thats what ive genrally seen from the base SCT tunes.

My fault. Guess I'm too used to the crappy Diablo tune.....

LIke you mentioned before, I still think a custom dyno tune would be a good idea.

Yes, really both sides had a leak the the drivers side was really bad.
