Laptop computer recommendation??
What laptops are you all using and/or what would you recommend? I am currently looking at either a lenovo, sony or toshiba. They seem to be the better choices recommended. I had a dell for almost a year and it was the biggest POS I have ever owned....CD burner replaced, Harddrive replaced, numerous software problems and lock-ups. I was considering HP, but I have read here on the internet about too many complaints with them and their customer service.

Re: Laptop computer recommendation??
My next Laptop will be the Acer with a 8.9" screen.
I have an HP Pavilion DV8200 with a 17" monitor that I have had for about 2.5 - 3 years....and it has been EXCELLENT. Except the battery that just went out a few weeks back. The Acer I mentioned is a sweet little computer. But it does not feature an optical drive. But it is only $350 and has 1g ram / 120g HD. With an Intel Atom processor. Surely not for a gamer etc....but good for tuning, internet, photos etc. And it is LIGHT.

Today I bought my wife a HP G60-123CL at Costco for $700. It better be good or I'm going to kick somebodys azz.

Re: Laptop computer recommendation??
You really just need to make sure that whatever you buy has a good service plan. Dell does not make the components that you mentioned had failed, and the same will be true of other manufacturers. What you are really paying for is the service behind it.
With that said, I lean towards the Lenovo mainly because I have seen Thinkpads go through hell and back. I would also consider HP/Compaq or Toshiba. Personally, I wouldn't buy a Sony because they are overpriced...you are paying a premium for the name. FWIW, I'm locked into Dell due to a corporate contract. The only thing that I don't like about my laptop is the cheap hard drive...if someone bangs on the table you can hear the platters rattle, and we have experienced lots of hard drive failures. We do have a pilot program for Apple that I'm trying to get into. |

Re: Laptop computer recommendation??
I have a HP laptop an desktop, have my laptop for over 3 years an only one problem, but even out of warranty they still covered it for free an always excellent customer service, an because of that I bought a HP desktop, HP is good, toshiba is good, sony overpriced!, dell an acer decent, most stuff today is pretty good, i would stick to name brands an not some bubba brand.

Re: Laptop computer recommendation??
I've owned several laptops over the years. I've had Sony, Dell, and HP. The Sony was the best one for playing DVD's even on battery, both the Dell and HP when I played back video on them on battery power they would hitch up. They all took a beating as I was in the Navy and inadvertantly would have one fall off a desk during heavy seas. The only problem I had with the Dell was the ethernet would only work when it wanted too. I currently have another HP and it's not bad plays some games and video fairly well only problem I have is the DVD drive doesn't want to always stay shut, mostly from it falling or from the way I lift it sometimes.

Re: Laptop computer recommendation??
Between work, home and military, I've used ll of the brands you've mentioned found them overall to be good. I've had really good luck with Acers over the years (currently using my 3rd one). I've only owned one HP, but it worked fine for ~3 years that I owned it.
I've never owned a Sony mostly because they tend to be a bit over-priced, but if you find a rare good deal, I've never heard anything to indicate there's anything wrong with them. |

Re: Laptop computer recommendation??
I've had a Dell XPS for the last three years and it has been a great computer never had a single problem with it. At work I use a Sony and it has been a good laptop also, except for my Z key has fallen off of it.
Not sure what you do with your, the only thing mine get used for is the internet and Microsoft Excel/Word, and both have worked really well. My next personal computer is going to be a MAC.

Re: Laptop computer recommendation??
OK guys, I appreciate the feedback. I would have loved to owned an apple mac, but too far out of my price range. I ended up going with the IBM/Lenovo, which I am typing on at the moment. Very ruggedly built. It's a little on the heavy side, but built. 4GB and 320 hard-drive, should have enough capacity for a while. Thanks for all of the input.

I'm sure you know who that is..... I won't say because some here might get on an up-roar then it will become another political "locked thread".

Re: Laptop computer recommendation??
Oh yes.... 2 years including accidental, which includes dropping and breaking it, spilling stuff into it, breaking or cracking the screen, etc.

Re: Laptop computer recommendation??
After reading what a POS the HP G60-123CL was on line I took it back to Costco for a refund. I then went to Office Depot and bought the HP Pavilion dv5-1160us.
