Clutch Cable/Quadrant issues.

Some help would be awesome. Well, I knew i shouldnt have bothered. My stock setup has always worked great but going by some advice i picked up here, i decided to try out a firewall adjuster and quadrant. I had an adjustable quadrant laying around un used from another project so i figured id use that. I picked up a Fiore quadrant off a member here. He said it dodnt work with his clutch but im thinking possibly he had purchased an incorrect one.

My setup is, my original OEM cable, removed the rubber part at the firewall adjuster according to the instructions, Installed the quadrant (properly, cant really screw that up) and have the cable hooked at the trans/fork and the quadrant. Brand new 03-04 cobra clutch/PP and aluminum flywheel. Trans is a T56 but that was existing.

My issue is, with everything hooked up if i pull on the cable housing in order to take up the slack in the system it comes out about 3" from the firewall before it stops. The firewall adjuster doesn't turn out far enough to take all the slack (i wouldn't imagine you would have to turn it out that far ever anyway). The adjuster instructions state that you adjust the adjuster so that about 1/8" gap remains if you pull the cable housing from the adjuster/firewall. I didnt expect an issue like this.

My cable is in excellent shape and i think its rather unlikely that the cable could stretch or the housing could compress enough to cause an issue like this without causing an issue with the stock adjuster at the very least.

I'm thinking the quadrant is wrong. Perhaps its for a fox or something like that. Any thoughts? I would rather not use anything but an OEM cable. Here is a pic.

Re: Clutch Cable/Quadrant issues.

Did you check the fiore website?
See if Fox and New Edge are different?
Is there part number on the quad?
If so, is it the right one?

Re: Clutch Cable/Quadrant issues.

I'll have to get back under there to see if it has a part # on it. I assumed they were all the same but this is making me think i need to stop assuming such things. I didn't damage the stock quadrant/adjuster so if i HAVE to i can re install that stuff. Headed to google to check out quadrants now.

Edit:
shoot, that would have been too easy. Doesn't make sense though, what else could it be?

Re: Clutch Cable/Quadrant issues.

i checked fiores website and they only made one quadrant for all mustangs...
are you sure your installing the adjuster and quadrant correctly? im thinking you might have installed the cable incorrectly in the adjuster.....

Re: Clutch Cable/Quadrant issues.

Im pretty **** sure its installed correctly. I cant see it being possible to screw it up.

prep the cable housing (remove the rubber firewall end)

mount the firewall adjuster.

mount the quadrant.

install the cable.

Adjust.

Re: Clutch Cable/Quadrant issues.

Hmm...that firewall adjuster doesn't look like my Fiore adjuster. Wonder if that is the issue.

Re: Clutch Cable/Quadrant issues.

I can snap a few tomorrow when i go back to the garage. I didnt use that firewall adjuster though i used a UPR one that i had. They do the same thing the same way so i cant see it being the issue.

Re: Clutch Cable/Quadrant issues.

Routing shouldn't make a difference. You still have the same length cable and sheathing. As long as it's not kinked, it will give the same amount of pull.

Re: Clutch Cable/Quadrant issues.

Mine looks just like that but if you pull on the cable housing it pulls out (almost 3" measured from the firewall itself) before it stops.

Re: Clutch Cable/Quadrant issues.

Strange. I've got a Fiore quadrant and adjuster, factory cable and the stock tranny and it works flawlessly. Wonder if it's something with how it hooks into the T-56...

The pix of the quadrant you put up matches mine exactly. Are you sure that you got the second hole of the quadrant on the post, or is it sitting behind it? If it's sitting behind it, that could cause what you're seeing.

Re: Clutch Cable/Quadrant issues.

Yeah. i used rubber o rings to align it with the cable and its on both pins with the clips through them.

Technically, the only thing that changed here is the clutch/PP/FW, adjuster and quadrant. The engine, T56, clutch pedal assy. cable etc. all came out of the red car and worked perfectly.

I hope i go back and find i missed something or did something stupid. It's a pretty simple thing. I certainly didn't expect this.

Re: Clutch Cable/Quadrant issues.

Since you have about 3 inches of slack in the cable, I would recommend pulling the cover off of the bellhousing and making sure that the cable is properly attached to the clutch fork.

Re: Clutch Cable/Quadrant issues.

Make sure the clutch arm is attached to the pivot stud.
Maybe it popped off somehow.

Re: Clutch Cable/Quadrant issues.

That adjuster is not like the Fiore adjuster on my car, the quad looks right. I'm not sure that would create a problem but something is.

This is a Fiore adjuster, on a very early Mustang (33)

Re: Clutch Cable/Quadrant issues.

Well here we go. Only thing i noticed about the install is maybe the TB isn't on correctly. Might have moved it out of place maneuvering the trans into place. Once pulled tight, the clutch pedal look petty much where it should be.

Pic 1 and 2 show the cable at the firewall. one shows the cable at rest against the adjuster and the other shows the cables housing pulled to take up the slack. Firewall adjuster all the way in.

These next 2 show the cable as it is at rest in the clutch fork and one of the TB. The fork is in the pivot ball correctly and the cable is mounted in the bell housing correctly (no pic).

Re: Clutch Cable/Quadrant issues.

These last two show the quadrant install (best i could snap) and the pedals with the cable pulled tight.

The cable feels mint. I cant see it being a cable stretch or housing compression issue. It mostly seems like the quadrant isnt long enough. Only other thing i can think of is perhaps the 03-04 cobra uses a shorter cable. With the T56 i had the original T45's clutch,PP/FW, in there. Now it has the 03-04 cobra clutch/FW/PP but same cable.

Re: Clutch Cable/Quadrant issues.

I think you are right, a 03-04 cable is shorter then a 96-98(perhaps 99/01)
